You don’t see the phrase “bible-inspired fantasy action RPG” often in the realm of games, but if anyone could deliver that sort of oddball premise, it’s Steam.
Over on Steam now, a listing went up for just that kind of game, and it seems to feature sweeping vistas inspired by biblical locations and an old-school combat system. It’s safe to say that no one really saw this coming.
A Bible-Inspired Fantasy RPG?
It’s Somewhat Uncharted Territory
From developer/publisher Calyxir comes The Abased, an action-RPG that’s themed around multiple biblical elements. The gist involves ridding the land of a scourge of giants through action-based combat: which sounds like an Attack on Titan take as well, with a dash of God of War.
Here’s the full rundown from Calyxir: “Bible-inspired fantasy action RPG. Play as Elyhias, a leper and fallen faith enforcer marked by affliction. Armed with slings and blades, you must face the resurgent giants who once ruled the ancient land. In exchange, you are promised atonement and cleansing before your flesh succumbs to abasement.”
According to the game’s lore, the giants will be formidable foes: “Once, these lands were inhabited by the Mighty – giants of superhuman strength, stature, and longevity. They were not monsters, but the first rulers of this realm, shaped according to an older order of creation. Their numbers were great, and their power was divided among many. They were numerous, yet fewer than ordinary humans, who were as locusts across the land.”
That “biblical” motif will come into play in combat as well, as you’ll utilize slings and blades against giants, while the protagonist is “burdened by three afflictions.” Apparently, there will be a “faith versus instinct” system, where you have to choose between devotion and feral strength. Ideally, this sort of mechanic influences more than just a few statistics.
The Abased also offers “more than just giant hunts,” according to the studio, including “threats and varied objectives that require precision, tracking, and practical use of your abilities.” That might appeal to folks who aren’t even into the biblical setting if it delivers.
The Abased Looks Pretty Cool, Actually
In Theory
While the jury is still out on The Abased, it has promise given the wild concept, and if it has a solid combat system, it could catch on with a specific crowd. At the very least, it’ll give Attack on Titan fans something to play, as the giants are described as “physically imposing opponents who demand patience and precision rather than reckless aggression.”
You’ll be able to try The Abased on Steam sometime in the future. Right now, it doesn’t have a release date or window.
