The Witcher Season 5 Release Window Addressed By Showrunner

The Witcher season 4 is now streaming on Netflix, and the showrunner addresses when the final episodes will drop. The fantasy show has recently undergone a massive change, with Liam Hemsworth taking over the mantle of Geralt of Rivia after Henry Cavill’s surprise exit.

Following season 4’s premiere on October 8, the reception has been super mixed between critics and audiences. It’s the lowest-rated season by far with a 60% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes following 20 reviews. Audiences are even more negative about the new episodes under Hemsworth’s era, leading to an abysmal 19% Popcornmeter. Despite the poor reception, The Witcher will have a season 5, but it will also be its last.

While speaking with Variety, showrunner Lauren Schmidt-Hissrich addressed the release window for season 5, responding that it’s “Hopefully shorter. Two and a half years is never ideal.” She acknowledged why season 4 took longer due to the “writers’ strike in the middle of that,” so “fingers crossed” that season 5 won’t be a longer wait.

She also provided a status update on season 5, saying: “We are working so hard in post, we wrapped almost a month ago. We’re we’re pushing ahead and hope to be able to deliver it audiences a little bit sooner.”

Liam Hemsworth as Geralt with Ciri and Yennefer in The Witcher season 4

The last season was announced when the Netflix fantasy show was still filming season 4 in April 2024. Season 5 was filmed not long after the spring of 2025 and wrapped up in September. At this point, the final season is in post-production and could aim for a possible 2026 release if there are no further delays.

Hemsworth will helm his second season as Geralt, while Freya Allan and Anya Chalotra will reprise their roles as Ciri and Yennefer one last time. It’s expected that the final season will conclude their respective character arcs. The Witcher season 4 ending has left Ciri in a very dark place after her time with the Rats, while Yennefer prepares to battle Vilgefortz.

The Witcher is based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s book series, which consists of nine books before eventually growing into a hit video game. While the video game The Witcher 4 is in development, Netflix hasn’t announced any further spinoffs, but The Rats: A Witcher Tale was quietly released on the streamer.

On the other hand, the end is near for Netflix’s fantasy series, and it will only be a matter of time before the first teaser for The Witcher season 5 becomes available alongside confirmation on a release date.
