The Next Crown On Netflix?

The plan for House of Guinness’ future is starting to sound a lot like The Crown. For fans of costume period dramas, historical subject material, and steamy romance surrounding well-known aristocrats, House of Guinness is the next addictive title. The show is created by Steven Knight, the award-winning writer behind Peaky Blinders.

House of Guinness explores the titular family during a tumultuous period of Ireland’s history, examining a few years in the 1860s and ’70s. This raises questions about the show’s history following season 1’s climactic ending, and whether it will have a future on Netflix beyond just the opening eight episodes.

Steven Knight’s Plans For House Of Guinness’ Future Mirror The Crown

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Steven Knight revealed his intentions for the show’s future. While he explained that nothing is concrete, he’d like to take the story into the 20th century, examining the Guinness family for more decades to come. A historical event like the Irish War of Independence could make for a captivating ending point.

Although the Guinness family isn’t quite as prominent now as they once were, they still have a hefty amount of wealth built on the foundations of the show’s events. There’s plenty of story for House of Guinness to explore in the future, and Knight’s description sounds notably similar to The Crown.

The Crown examined the life of Queen Elizabeth II and other members of the Royal Family, from the reign of King George VI all the way to the 2000s, covering roughly half a century of material. In order to fulfill such a lengthy narrative, every other season of The Crown saw the cast overhauled with older actors to take over the roles.

While Steven Knight’s plans for the show are far from concrete, it’s fun to think about what House of Guinness would look like in a 1910s setting, and if the main characters of the first season would be played by the same stars in prosthetics, or if they’d be replaced by older talent.

House Of Guinness Is Much Less Historically Accurate Than The Crown

While The Crown undoubtedly took its creative liberties, speculating on the behind-the-scenes drama of Buckingham Palace, it was never quite as fictional as House of Guinness. Much like with Peaky Blinders, Steven Knight invented many of his characters from scratch, with almost everyone outside the Guinness family being fictional.

House of Guinness’ numerous historical inaccuracies shouldn’t damage anyone’s opinion of the series, but it makes it all the more important for viewers to research the real stories.
