Grogu’s height isn’t the only thing that’s short in The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Anticipation is high for the upcoming Star Wars movie, which is the franchise’s first since The Rise of Skywalker was released in 2019. While many plot details remain under wraps, the film is confirmed to feature Din Djarin and Grogu working with the New Republic as the duo takes on the Imperial Remnant and criminal syndicates. Science-fiction icon Sigourney Weaver makes her franchise debut as the New Republic’s Colonel Ward while The Bear‘s Jeremy Allen White voices Rotta the Hutt, the son of Jabba the Hutt.
Now, the runtime for The Mandalorian and Grogu has been listed on AMC, Cinemark, and Regal as two hours and 12 minutes. This is the shortest runtime for a Star Wars movie since 2008, when the animated The Clone Wars movie was released with a runtime of one hour and 38 minutes. The Mandalorian and Grogu is also shorter than The Force Awakens (two hours and 18 minutes), Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (two hours and 13 minutes), The Last Jedi (two hours and 32 minutes), Solo: A Star Wars Story (two hours and 15 minutes), and The Rise of Skywalker (two hours and 21 minutes).
Star Wars Movie | Runtime |
|---|---|
The Clone Wars (2008) | 1 Hour & 38 Minutes |
The Force Awakens (2015) | 2 Hours & 18 Minutes |
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) | 2 Hours & 13 Minutes |
The Last Jedi (2017) | 2 Hours & 32 Minutes |
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018( | 2 Hours & 15 Minutes |
The Rise of Skywalker (2019) | 2 Hours & 21 Minutes |
The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) | 2 Hours & 12 Minutes |
While The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s runtime is the shortest Star Wars movie since Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, it is not by a significant margin, with it only being one minute shorter than Rogue One, three minutes shorter than Solo, five minutes shorter than The Force Awakens, and nine minutes shorter than The Rise of Skywalker. The most substantial difference is being 20 minutes shorter than The Last Jedi, but the Rian Johnson-directed film is already distinct for having the franchise’s all-time longest runtime.
With Din and Grogu’s story being told in the Star Wars TV show The Mandalorian up until now, a frequent talking point about their upcoming film is whether it can feel like a theatrical movie instead of just an extended television episode. The runtime being so similar to other Star Wars movies is a promising sign of it feeling like a proper cinematic experience, although this can’t be fully assessed until The Mandalorian and Grogu is released in theaters.
Given the movie’s roots in a television series, it being the shortest since The Clone Wars is fitting. The 2008 animated film was also rooted in television, as it was meant to act as a pilot to the Cartoon Network series of the same name. The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s story even has strong ties to The Clone Wars movie, as it introduced Rotta the Hutt as a baby and made him central to the plot. Instead of being an extended pilot episode meant to get viewers invested in an upcoming series, though, the new Star Wars movie is a continuation of a story that has been ongoing since The Mandalorian season 1 debuted on Disney+ in 2019.
As revealed in The Mandalorian and Grogu trailers, another Clone Wars character is also going to be in the movie due to an appearance from the bounty hunter Embo, who was not in the animated movie but was in multiple episodes of the television show. The two hour and 12 minute runtime will feature Embo alongside Din, Grogu, Colonel Ward, Rotta the Hutt, Star Wars Rebels‘ Zeb Orrelios, the Hutt Twins, and Imperial warlords.
The Mandalorian and Grogu releases in theaters on May 22, 2026.
