The Last of Us really did have the stealth action genre locked down for a while back there, with Naughty Dog’s epic duology showing just how cinematic and tense games could be as a medium.
Given that all their focus is now on the release of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and will be for some time, it’s doubtful that we’ll get any new adventures in the zombie-riddled post-apocalypse any time soon.
Fortunately, there are lots of great developers out there who are driving towards a similar goal, and one upcoming game really does look like it has all the ingredients to blow the genre wide open once again.
Nobody’s Left Looks Super Ambitious
Over on Steam, you should be able to find the store page for the upcoming third-person stealth shooter Nobody’s Left, from indie developer Madrain Studio.
The hugely ambitious release is set in an unnamed post-apocalyptic city that has been devastated by the ravages of war, in what was formerly a lush, beautiful and peaceful haven.
In what is obviously a big change from games like The Last of Us, there aren’t any zombies or horrible monsters here. That said, if you’ve played those games, you’ll know humans can be just as dangerous as the undead, and there will be plenty of them to confront on your journey across the wastes.
The game is linear and it has a pretty tight story, much of which you’ll pick up via environmental storytelling and pseudo-Easter eggs. At the same time, combat is very recognizable for veterans of the genre, and you’ll be relying on a mixture of stealthy gunplay and up-close and personal melee exchanges.
The description of the game really impresses upon the player just how intelligent the enemy AI is. They will respond realistically to any noises you make, and if they see you first, they might not just start firing. Instead, you’ll find enemies that sneak up on you, leading to some pretty intense jump scares along the way.
A Playtest Is Coming Up Soon
Though the game doesn’t have a full release date just yet, that doesn’t mean you can’t hop in and give the game a go. The developer is currently accepting applicants for a playtest that’s on the way soon, and that will allow you to work through the game and feedback directly to those making it.
To get involved, you simply need to click the green button on the Steam page, just above the usual section where you add it to your wishlist. In lieu of not getting any more The Last of Us, this seems like the next best thing.
