The Expanse is one of the best sci-fi TV shows of all time, but it can only be deemed perfect if Prime Video orders a sequel series for a very simple reason. Among Prime Video’s best series is The Expanse, which was not originally released on the streamer. At first, the sci-fi series came out on SyFy, with Prime Video saving it after cancellation.
After being saved by Prime Video, The Expanse would end with six seasons. There are positives and negatives to that, with the former fairly mattering more than the latter. After all, fans managed to get three more seasons of one of the best sci-fi shows of all time due to Prime Video saving it. However, the show could have gone on for longer than it did.
Prime Video Found A Fitting Ending To The Expanse But Not A Perfect One
It is hard to say that The Expanse season 6 was bad for the show. At the end of the day, the Prime Video series did a fitting job of wrapping up its characters’ arcs in an action-packed and emotional final season. However, it was not perfect, as the show had its shortest season ever, with only six episodes, and dangled the Laconia plot thread but never followed up with sequel books.
In its six seasons, The Expanse adapted as many main books in the franchise. However, the last three sci-fi novels in the series, Persepolis Rising, Tiamat’s Wrath, and Leviathan Falls, never made it to the small screen. On the one hand, I can understand why, as the show used the natural stopping point before a 30-year time jump in the books to end the main story of The Expanse.
However, The Expanse‘s final three books, which see Laconia as a main antagonist under the rule of High Consul Winston Duarte, are arguably among the best in the sci-fi franchise. As such, while The Expanse season 6 gives the show a natural ending, those who have not read the books are missing out on some of the best political intrigue, shocking twists, and dark stories in the franchise.
The Expanse Fans Can Already Enjoy A TV Show Sequel In Another Form
At the time of writing, there is no indication that Prime Video will ever make a sequel series to The Expanse to cover the final three books. However, fans of the show who want to get something else after the series finale but not through the original books can find the perfect The Expanse sequel in the form of a comic book series.
The Expanse: Dragon Tooth, a 12-issue comic book series set between the events of Babylon’s Ashes and Persepolis Rising, exploring what happens during the 30-year time jump, ran from April 19, 2023, to May 29, 2024. The comics pick up after the sci-fi series’ ending and tie up loose threads, while connecting the show to future events from the books, making it a must-read for The Expanse fans.
