The animated films The Addams Family and The Addams Family 2 are experiencing a surge in popularity on Netflix worldwide ahead of the premiere of Wednesday season 3.
Netflix’s streaming charts show both animated films drawing a significant amount of attention from its subscribers. The first film claimed the number 4 spot on Netflix’s top 10 list. Released in 2019, The Addams Family featured a star-studded cast that consisted of Oscar Isaac (Gomez Addams), Charlize Theron (Morticia Addams), Chloë Grace Moretz (Wednesday Addams), Finn Wolfhard (Pugsley Addams), Nick Kroll (Uncle Fester), and Snoop Dogg (Itt).
The Addams Family 2 sits at the number 3 spot at the time of this article’s publication. The 2021 movie follows the titular family on a cross-country road trip. It features several actors from its predecessor, along with a few new voices. Bill Hader (Cyrus Strange) and Wallace Shawn (Mr. Mustela) joined the cast for the sequel, while Javon ‘Wanna’ Walton replaced Wolfhard as the voice of Pugsley.
The recent rise in viewership for the movies may also be tied to the upcoming release of Wednesday season 3, which Netflix has confirmed is in development. While production has begun on the popular show, the show isn’t expected to debut on the streaming platform until 2027. The recent gain in traction could be caused by fans who are revisiting the franchise’s older projects while eagerly waiting for the new season.
Although The Addams Family and The Addams Family 2 aren’t directly linked to Wednesday, it is common for interest in a franchise’s content to skyrocket between major releases. Since the Jenna Ortega-led series significantly expanded the Addams Family’s audience when it debuted in 2022, it could be argued that the show brought the ghoulish family back into the mainstream spotlight again while attracting the attention of newer generations.
The Addams Family, The Addams Family 2, and the first two seasons of Wednesday are available to stream on Netflix. There is no official release date for Wednesday season 3 at the time of this article’s publication.
