After being axed with only two seasons under its belt, the short-lived sci-fi drama from Steven Spielberg is finding fresh success.
The Halo TV show, based on the massively popular video game that has existed since 2001, is now climbing the streaming charts nearly two years after it was officially canceled. According to FlixPatrol, the show has charted to #4 on Apple TV’s VOD streaming services, with the two seasons now finding a new audience worldwide. The series cancellation was a big surprise, given how it had been developed for nearly a decade before finally making it to air.
Spielberg served as an executive producer on the Halo TV show, with Kyle Killen and Steven Kane as the developers and showrunners before David Wiener took over in the following season. Pablo Schreiber portrayed Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, with the Paramount+ production also starring Olive Gray as Commander Miranda Keyes, Yerin Ha as Kwan Ha, Shabana Azmi as Admiral Margaret Parangosky, Kate Kennedy as Kai-125, and Danny Sapani as Captain Jacob Keyes. Following Halo season 2, the studio pulled the plug on it on July 18, 2024.
At the time of the announcement, Paramount+ said in the following statement: “We are extremely proud of this ambitious series and would like to thank our partners at Xbox, 343 Industries and Amblin Television, along with showrunner and executive producer David Wiener, his fellow executive producers, the entire cast led by Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief and the amazing crew for all their outstanding work. We wish everyone the best going forward.”
Can Halo Season 3 Still Happen After Cancellation
While Halo season 2 resulted in a cancellation, the current age of TV revivals makes it possible for any show, whether it was long or short-lived, to come back, sometimes under a different network or platform, depending on the circumstances. Given the major IP that comes with the Halo franchise, it’s not a far stretch that some viewers may hope that season 3 becomes a reality somewhere else and not under Paramount+.
At the time of this story’s publication, there have not been any moves made in trying to make Halo season 3 happen with a different streamer. However, back when it was canceled, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that sources of theirs had informed them that there were attempts to try to get Halo season 3 made with a different outlet, as “Paramount+ is said to be supportive of a possible move.” But nothing ever emerged from that.
Why Halo Is Finding Success Outside Paramount+
Since Paramount+ isn’t available in every country around the world, whoever has the streaming rights in various countries will be able to present the Halo series to any viewer with the right subscription. The reason why the short-lived sci-fi military show is finding success in streaming out of the blue could be anywhere, due to people discovering that there was an adaptation based on the game years later, to those who don’t even follow the games. It’s also highly possible that those who didn’t watch Halo during its airing may have gotten curious to see how it related to the video game property, as well as how it was different.
Catch both seasons of Halo on Paramount+ in the United States and on Apple TV VOD worldwide.
