What To Play Next?
To begin, let’s look at Heartopia, a new life sim/city builder that came out on January 16. This is a cute, casual, cozy game that’s very much in the vein of The Sims meets Stardew Valley. You’ll design your own home, partake in hobbies like fishing, gardening, and birdwatching, and dress up your character in a variety of different outfits.
The big draw here is that Heartopia is designed for multiplayer, so you can build, explore, and enjoy with a group of friends. It’s a good way to spend some time with long-distance loved ones, with a laid-back vibe and lots of opportunities for interaction.
On the opposite end of the tonal spectrum, we have A Song of Sunlight, which describes itself as “an RPG set in a distant, lonely future.” You’ll play as Arem, a young man who leaves his home to explore a massive, abandoned megastructure beneath the island where he was born, only to discover a terrible secret.
A Song of Sunlight features “pseudo-turn-based” combat, a beautifully bleak world, and pages upon pages of text-based adventuring. It’s definitely not for everyone, but if that sort of Nier-esque dark, oppressive atmosphere is your cup of tea, this is one to watch.
Next is EmuDevz, a game in which you play as a developer working on your very own emulator. You’ll need a little bit of programming knowledge to get into it, but once you do, you’ll be able to write your own code, playtest homebrew games, and debug ROMs for the most accurate emulation possible.
Another highlight this week is War of Dots, a super-simple real-time strategy game where you control — you guessed it — a series of colored dots on a 2D map. With only two unit types, it’s incredibly easy to pick up and play, but boasts a great deal of tactical complexity under the surface.
Moving on down the list, we have Giant Snake Girl Wants The Burger, which is a puzzle-centric spin on the classic Snake. There’s also Party Party Anxiety, a card dating game where you’ll use cue cards to strike up conversations with a variety of different partners – but beware your anxiety meter, which will turn your date into a terrifying monster.
