Southampton 1-2 Wolves: Strand Larsen double edges Wolves closer to safety

Wolverhampton Wanderers moved nine points clear of the relegation zone as they ran out 2-1 winners at Southampton.

The home side made an encouraging start but fell behind after 19 minutes as Jorgen Strand Larsen headed home after a fine cross from Jean-Ricner Bellegarde.

They doubled their lead early in the second half, as Bellegarde picked out Strand Larsen once more, with the Norwegian international shifting onto his right and striking a low shot into the far corner.

Southampton managed to halve the deficit as Paul Onuachu applied a finish on the rebound after Tyler Dibling’s effort had struck a post, but Wolves were able to hold on for all three points.

Wolves remain in 17th place but are now nine points clear of Ipswich, while Southampton stay bottom of the table with nine points from 29 matches.

Data Debrief: Bellegarde steps up in Cunha’s absence

A lot has been said about the influence Matheus Cunha has as Wolves’ best player, but Bellegarde now has six assists to his name this season, which is the most of any Wolves player, including the Brazil international. He’s in fine form overall, with five goal involvements in his last six Premier League matches.

Wolves also continue their dominant form over Southampton in general, with today’s win their seventh in succession and their ninth in the Premier League overall.

This continues to be a wretched season for Southampton, with the club sat on just nine points with two months of the season still to go. This was their ninth consecutive top-flight defeat, becoming the fourth side to do so after Wolves in 2011/12, Birmingham City in 1985/86 and Watford in 2021/22.
