Shubman Gill or Jasprit Bumrah? Ishant Sharma picks India’s next Test captain

In the wake of Rohit Sharma’s recent retirement from Test cricket, the race to name India’s next red-ball captain has intensified, with veteran pacer Ishant Sharma throwing his considerable weight behind Jasprit Bumrah for the coveted role. However, reports suggest the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is leaning strongly towards entrusting the leadership mantle to the young and promising Shubman Gill.

Who should captain India in Test cricket? Ishant Sharma answers

Speaking at the Star Sports Press Room, Ishant articulated his clear preference, stating, “If Bumrah is fit, I would say Bumrah. That’s first choice. He is the only one who has so much experience.” Acknowledging the fast bowler’s well-documented fitness concerns, Sharma prudently added, “But if he won’t play all five Test matches, then obviously Shubman.” This endorsement from a seasoned Test campaigner like Ishant, who has shared the dressing room with both contenders, adds significant weight to the ongoing debate.

Bumrah, at 31, is undoubtedly a seasoned campaigner and has already had a taste of Test captaincy in high-stakes environments. He famously led India in the rescheduled fifth Test against England in 2022 and helmed the side for two matches during the recent 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. His tactical nous, on-field intelligence and an undeniable ability to inspire his teammates have earned him immense respect within the Indian squad. However, Bumrah’s recurring back injuries and the strenuous demands of being an all-format bowler cast a shadow over his capacity to handle the full-time captaincy workload. It is understood that Bumrah himself has expressed reservations about the added responsibility, prioritizing his fitness and long-term career.

On the other side of the ledger is 25-year-old Gill, who is widely considered the torchbearer for Indian cricket’s next generation. While his Test batting average remains a work in progress, Gill’s leadership credentials have been steadily accumulating. He is successfully leading Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 and has served as vice-captain in India’s white-ball formats. His calm temperament under pressure and mature decision-making have reportedly impressed selectors and former cricketers alike. Should he be appointed, Gill would become one of India’s youngest Test captains, tasked with leading a transitional side into a challenging five-match Test series in England, scheduled to commence on June 20.
