Robert Picardo Reveals Which Version Of The Doctor Is In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

Robert Picardo definitively answers which version of The Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager he plays in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Executive produced by Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy premieres January 15, 2026, with two episodes on Paramount+.

At CCXP, Academy Award nominee Paul Giamatti, who plays the villainous Nus Braka, introduced a four-minute clip from Star Trek: Starfleet Academy‘s premiere. Robert Picardo’s EMH (Emergency Medical Hologram) figures prominently in the new footage, with The Doctor established as the USS Athena’s Chief Medical Officer.

On Threads, Robert Picardo answered a fan question about whether he plays the original Doctor or the backup EMH from Star Trek: Voyager season 4’s “Living Witness.” Picardo said it was “an excellent question” that he also asked himself, but Bob settles the issue about which Doctor he plays in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. See Picardo’s post below:

Star Trek: Voyager season 4, episode 23, “Living Witness,” is set in the 31st century, 700 years after Star Trek: Voyager. A backup EMH program is activated to settle the historical record about the USS Voyager. The EMH then served as the surgical chancellor for the Kyrians and Vaskans for years before he departed for Earth.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is set in the late 32nd century after the end of Star Trek: Discovery. Naturally, Star Trek: Voyager fans, including Robert Picardo, conjectured that it could be the “Living Witness” version of the EMH in Star Trek‘s newest show. However, Starfleet Academy indeed features the original Doctor.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy does posit another question about The Doctor: Why has he aged? After all, the EMH is a hologram who can control his appearance. It also remains to be seen if Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will address The Doctor’s stint on Star Trek: Prodigy a few years after the USS Voyager returned to Earth.

Robert Picardo has spoken about how The Doctor being 800 years old in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy makes him “the Yoda” of the Star Trek universe. Robert Picardo’s classic EMH is a welcome bridge between Star Trek: Voyager‘s popular 24th century era and the future Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will chart.
