Goncalo Ramos scored a 90th-minute winner as an injury-hit Paris Saint-Germain side came from behind to beat Barcelona 2-1 in the Champions League.
Holders PSG were without several of the players who inspired them to a first Champions League crown four months ago, with Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue, Kvicha Kvaratskhelia and Marquinhos all missing out.
It looked as if it would be a long night when Ferran Torres slid Barca into a 19th-minute lead, but Senny Mayulu, scorer of the fifth goal in the 5-0 rout of Inter Milan in last season’s final, levelled seven minutes before half-time.
Despite their absentees, PSG finished the match the stronger, and they were rewarded when Achraf Hakimi teed up Ramos to seal the points, the Portugal forward making no mistake as Luis Enrique’s men made it two wins from two to start the league phase.
Barcelona start fast after further PSG setback
PSG suffered a blow before kick-off as Joao Neves added to their injury woes in the warm-up, with Warren Zaire-Emery coming into the starting XI in his place.
The holders were unsurprisingly on the backfoot in the early stages as Lamine Yamal’s return to the starting line-up fuelled a fast start from Barca.
It took a brilliant piece of defending from Ilya Zabarnyi to deny Barca the opener as he slid in to keep out Torres’ effort after the striker had rounded Lucas Chevalier following an exquisite Yamal throughball.
But just five minutes later Torres did break the deadlock, Yamal and Pedri combining after Vitinha lost possession before a superb move was rounded off with the former Manchester City striker stretching to turn home from on-loan Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford’s perfectly weighted ball across the box.
PSG respond despite Barcola profligacy
PSG grew into the game after going behind, though Bradley Barcola was guilty of profligacy as a heavy touch prevented him from getting a shot away when seemingly through on goal.
Achraf Hakimi’s free-kick drew a smart stop from Wojciech Szczesny, but there was nothing the Barca goalkeeper could do as Nuno Mendes embarked on an outstanding run through midfield and fed Mayulu to fire in an equaliser with a confident finish.
Barca appeared to completely lose their rhythm thereafter, and were fortunate that Barcola again fluffed his lines, firing over with only Szczesny to beat at the near post.
High line costs Barcelona
Barcola’s frustrating night continued in the second half as he stung the palms of Szczesny, before Dani Olmo saw his goal-bound effort brilliantly blocked Hakimi with Chevalier beaten.
Hansi Flick’s side did not rediscover their fluent best, though, with misplaced passes becoming more commonplace and the grans from the Olympic Stadium crowd growing louder.
The hosts were grateful to the woodwork for saving them when substitue Lee Kang-in hit the post from the edge of the area
Yet Barca’s high line was crucially caught out once more when Hakimi surged into space on the right and crossed for Ramos to complete a hugely impressive victory for the depleted visitors.
