Report, result and goals as hosts complete epic comeback

Sporting produced a stunning comeback to overturn a three-goal first-leg deficit and reach the Champions League quarter-finals, defeating Bodo/Glimt 5-0 on the night in an extraordinary tie that went to extra time.

Having lost 3-0 in Norway, the task appeared a tough one, but Sporting set about it from the first whistle with relentless intensity.

Trincao was the creative fulcrum throughout, forcing Haikin into a series of saves and creating chances at will down the right flank.

The breakthrough arrived on 34 minutes when Goncalo Inacio rose to head Trincao’s corner into the top-left corner, giving the Estadio Jose Alvalade the foothold it craved.

Bodo threatened briefly on the counter, Bjortuft twice struck the woodwork just before half-time, but could not halt Sporting’s momentum.

Pote doubled the lead on 61 minutes, firing into the roof of the net after Luis Suarez had burst down the right to square, and Suarez levelled the aggregate score on 78 minutes, converting a penalty from the spot after a VAR review ruled Bjorkan had handled Fresneda’s attempt.

Extra time drama

With the tie level at 3-3, Sporting showed no signs of fatigue in extra time. Maxi Araujo struck the decisive blow just two minutes in, curling a composed left-footed finish into the bottom corner from Trincao’s lay-off.

Substitute Rafael Nel wrapped up a famous victory in stoppage time, composing himself superbly before firing into the roof of the net at the near post.
