Rangers sack head coach Russell Martin after dismal start

Rangers have sacked head coach Russell Martin after just 17 games in charge of the club.

The decision comes after the latest setback, a 1-1 draw with Falkirk.

It leaves Rangers languishing eighth in the SPL, on as many points but 11 behind leaders Hearts.

The aftermath turned sour as frustrated supporters confronted the team bus, prompting police to escort Martin and his staff away from the stadium.

The club confirmed the decision in a statement on Sunday evening, acknowledging that “while all transition periods require some time, results have not met expectations.”

Appointed in June on a three-year deal by Rangers’ new American ownership group, Martin arrived with hopes of ushering in a new era of stability and modern football philosophy.

Instead, his tenure quickly unravelled amid a string of disappointing results and growing unrest among fans.

Rangers’ season began in disarray, with the club enduring a humiliating 9–1 aggregate defeat to Club Brugge in the Champions League play-offs.

Their domestic form fared little better – it took until late September for the team to register their first league win, and a series of frustrating draws left them struggling to find momentum.

Martin leaves having won just one of his seven league fixtures, with a total of five victories in all competitions during his short reign.

In addition to Martin’s departure, assistant Matt Gill and first-team coach Mike Williamson have also left the club.

Rangers released an official statement expressing gratitude to the outgoing coaching staff:

“Russell and his staff have worked exceptionally hard throughout their time at the club. We thank them for their efforts and wish them well for the future.

“Further updates from the club will follow in due course.”
