Rangers lacked quality in huge Scottish Cup upset, concedes Clement

Philippe Clement conceded that Rangers lacked quality after they were stunned by second-tier Queen’s Park in their Scottish Cup clash at Ibrox on Sunday.

Clement watched on as his side were beaten 1-0 on home soil, with Seb Drozd’s 69th-minute strike earning Queen’s Park a first appearance in the final eight since 1928.

Rangers had the chance to take the game to extra-time in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time when Cyriel Dessers won a late penalty after being pushed in the box.

However, James Tavernier’s spot-kick was brilliantly saved by the outstanding Calum Ferrie, with the Queen’s Park goalkeeper making a string of fine stops throughout.

Clement’s side were made to pay for spurning numerous first-half opportunities, with Mohamed Diomande and Vaclav Cerny all seeing their efforts saved by Ferrie.

Rangers dominated the contest, boasting 64% possession while also posting 28 shots, though only nine of which were on target on a frustrating day for the hosts.

With Rangers also 13 points behind leaders Celtic in the Scottish Premiership standings, Sunday’s defeat has all-but ended any hopes of claiming any silverware this season.

“The first half, not a high enough tempo. Because of that, we didn’t create enough,” Clement told BBC Scotland.

“Second half, there were more chances but too many in a rush. One chance, and they get the goal. It’s a hold up at the end, but we should have been better with our efficiency.

“We had more efforts on target today than we have had all season, but we didn’t manage to score – not even with a penalty. We lacked quality in the decision-making.

“Maybe the team wanted to react too much. I was not happy at half-time, but they need to keep composure in these moments.”
