America’s most famous weatherperson has spoken, and it appears that there’s going to be six more weeks of winter coming up. Punxsutawney Phil, the weather-predicting groundhog, has made its winter forecast known, and locals are preparing for some more cold spells.

As the groundhog popped out of his climate-controlled habitat, affectionately called “Phil’s Burrow” located at the Punxsutawney Memorial Library in Pennsylvania, to see what the big commotion was, it saw its own shadow. According to Phil’s handlers, this signifies that there will be at least six more weeks of winter. The news came as a bit of a disappointment for many, as the bitter, below-zero temperatures continue.

A large crowd came out to Gobbler’s Knob, a small hill about 2 miles from town, to see the beloved groundhog make his prediction, braving the already brutally cold weather. His announcement was met by a mix of elation and a few boos. The cold has already been a problem for residents of Pennsylvania, and news of further cold isn’t what most were hoping for.

In fact, the cold was so harsh on the day the famous groundhog made his prediction known that the usual photo shoot with the weather rodent was canceled. Usually, visitors to the event are invited to snap a picture with Punxsutawney Phil, but this year it was too cold to manage.

Instead, people were asked to simply take a selfie while facing the stage. The change didn’t dampen people’s spirits, although the news of six more weeks of winter might have. The energy and excitement for his prediction were high at Gobblers Knob this year.

The groundhog’s predictions were made famous by the film starring Bill Murray, Groundhog Day​​​​​​. Since the movie’s release and subsequent success, people have traveled from far and wide to come and see the rodent make its appearance and let everyone know what the future holds for the country.

The tradition, supposedly, stems from Europe. According to legend, the Dutch brought the idea across to help break up the monotony of long, bleak winters. The event, although claiming to predict winter, is really just an excuse for a bit of fun and a reason to get out of the house when the weather is below freezing.

The tradition has been in place for around 140 years. The organizers of the event claim that it’s always been the same groundhog. That would make old Punxsutawney Phil one of the oldest groundhogs of all time. It’s hard to dispute, as not many people can really distinguish one groundhog from another. They all look kind of the same.

As for what the news means for those of us in winter climates? Don’t pack those parkas up just yet.
