One of the best post-apocalyptic sci-fi shows on Prime Video also ranks among the greatest video game adaptations of the century. So far, the show in question has had an incredible 2-season run and seems to be showing no signs of slowing down. If all goes well for it in its upcoming installments, it could become the best video game small-screen adaptation ever made.
Video game adaptations have always been hit or miss. While some of them have come off as forced extensions of existing video game franchises, others have proven that games can be translated to the live-action storytelling medium.
Fortunately, Prime Video’s two-season post-apocalyptic thriller falls in the latter category as it effectively expands its source material’s lore while also etching its own identity in the sci-fi genre.
Fallout Is Easily One Of The Best Game Adaptations Ever Made
Prime Video’s Fallout is a rare adaptation that stays true to its source material’s lore, perfectly captures its original game’s retro-futuristic decay, and even manages to fascinate new viewers. Considering how much ground it covers in terms of capturing the game’s lore, Fallout could have easily come off as an information dump, especially for viewers who know little about its source material.
However, by mastering the art of showing and not telling, the series primarily unfolds from a three-point perspective by focusing on three main characters: Lucy the Vault Dweller, Maximus the Brotherhood squire, and The Ghoul. Through each character, it walks through every facet and faction that divides its world while also giving a glimpse of what the past looked like.
It needles these perspectives with the ultraviolence, 1950s optimism, and pitch-black comedy that made the original games so fascinating. Like most fantasy adaptations, its visuals do involve the use of heavy CGI.
However, Fallout ensures that its world feels lived-in and as immersive as the games by using practical effects. The show’s post-apocalyptic sci-fi drama is further elevated by the brilliant performances of its cast, including Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, and Moisés Arias, among others. Walton Goggins, especially, is a standout in the series with his portrayal of The Ghoul.
Since other modern game adaptations like The Last of Us and Arcane also do an incredible job of delivering their source material’s essence on the small screen, it would be unfair to call Fallout the absolute best. However, it has rightfully earned its place among the best game adaptations of all time.
Shows Like Fallout Spells A Hopeful Future For Upcoming Game Adaptations
Over a decade ago, video game adaptations were rarely taken seriously. Most of them either tried to emulate their source material or completely change all the elements that made their games great in the first place. Fortunately, this trend is finally starting to change.
Time and again, game adaptations like Fallout and The Last of Us are starting to prove that, if handled carefully, acclaimed video games can be turned into some incredible long-running TV shows.
Now that some successful adaptations have established the blueprint for success, it seems likely that we will get to see more worthy game-to-screen takes in the near future. Prime Video’s upcoming God of War adaptation already seems promising, and it is hard not to be hopeful about its future after Fallout‘s success on the streaming service.
Hopefully, after Prime Video‘s Fallout, this trend of TV shows doing justice to beloved video game franchises will continue and pave the way for other games like Silent Hill, Resident Evil, and even lesser-explored titles to finally receive the thoughtful adaptations they deserve.
