The Assassin’s Creed franchise by Ubisoft has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 2007. The original title mixed conspiracy theories with historical fiction, stealth, and action combat. Since then, the series has grown to include more than 30 titles across many time periods and locations.

If you’re a PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium member, you can play a big chunk of the Assassin’s Creed games for free. There are 13 Assassin’s Creed games in the PlayStation Plus games catalog, making it possible to play almost half of all the games in the popular franchise.

Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag (2013)

A Pirate’s Life For Me

Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag takes players to the Caribbean in the early 1700s. Play as the pirate captain Edward Kenway, who was trained by the Assassins. Despite being released in 2013, this title remains one of the franchise’s best and most beloved.

There are 75 different locations to discover, with exploration spanning both the land and water. Ship Warfare adds another fun element to the series.

Assassin’s Creed Unity (2014)

The Black Sheep Of The Mainline Games

When Assassin’s Creed Unity was released, it suffered from horrible launch bugs. To this day, it remains one of the lowest-rated mainline games in the series, with 72 and 5.9 on Metacritic. Now, years later, you can enjoy the game with most of the bugs ironed out through the PS Plus catalog and judge for yourself whether it deserves the abysmal rating.

Unity is set in the late 1700s in France, during the French Revolution. Play as Arno Dorian and expose the real force behind the Revolution, all while seeking revenge for his adoptive father’s murder.

Assassin’s Creed Freedom Cry (2014)

A DLC Turned Into A Complete Game

Assassin’s Creed Freedom Cry lets you play as Adewale, an ex-slave Assassin who first appeared in Black Flag. Originally released as DLC for the fourth Assassin’s Creed game, Freedom Cry is another pirate adventure.

This time, the game takes place between 1735 and 37 in Saint-Domingue, on the site of modern-day Haiti. Lead Adewale on his quest to gather a crew of pirates and free the slaves.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate (2015)

Twin Assassins In London

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate lets players control two characters in 1860s London, during the Industrial Revolution. Much like in the more recent Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the two characters had different playstyles and shook the franchise’s formula up.

The game followed twins Jacob and Evie Frye. Jacob plays as a close-range brawler while Evie is a stealthy and clever character, who often choses brain over brawn to resolve conflicts. The combat was also revamped for this entry, with a new emphasis placed on chaining attacks and blocks.

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China (2015)

A New Perspective On The Franchise

The Chronicles spinoff games were developed by Climax Studios and offered a new take on the established formula. Instead of open, 3D exploration, Chronicles placed players in a 2.5D environment with hand-drawn backgrounds. The three games featured side-scrolling stealth and combat, and a linear progression with much less exploration.

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China placed players in 16th century China during the Mind dynasty. Here, they played as Shao Jun, an Assassin who seeks to eliminate the Eight Tigers, a group of Templars who rule China from the shadows.

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: India (2016)

More Side-Scrolling Adventures Through History

Assasssin’s Creed Chronicles: India took the same approach to the franchise as China. Once again, players assumed the role of an Assassin journeying through a 2.5D side-scrolling adventure.

This time, the game was set in 1840s India during the final years of the Sikh Empire. The protagonist was Arbaaz Mir, an Assassin charged with recovering the famed Koh-i-Noor diamond, while also protecting his mentor and lover.

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia (2016)

The Final Piece Of The Trilogy

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia completes the trilogy of Chronicles titles by Climax Studios. In this game, you play as Nikolai Orelov in the aftermath of the 1917 October Revolution. Orelov embarks on his final mission, to retrieve a special box from the hands of the Romanov family.

As with most “final” missions, this one goes wrong and leaves him in charge of the youngest daughter of the former Tsar Nicholas II. This game also links back to Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China, as the daughter now also has the powers and memories of Shao Jun.

Assassin’s Creed The Ezio Collection (2016)

Revisit The Games Starring Ezio Auditore

Assassin’s Creed The Ezio Collection was a remaster of the three titles that starred Ezio Auditore da Firenze, Assassin’s Creed II, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations. These games take players back to the series’ origins during the Italian Renaissance in the 15th and 16th centuries.

The remasters included improved graphics and lighting. More notably, they included all the downloaded content ever released for the games, allowing players to experience the full saga of Ezio.

Assassin’s Creed Origins (2017)

Back To The Beginning

After receiving poor reviews for its previous two mainline games, Ubisoft took an extra year to make Assassin’s Creed Origins. The result is a more polished game that once again shook up the Assassin’s Creed formula to be more like a traditional RPG with dynamic combat.

In this game, players follow Bayek of Siwa and his wife Aya through Egypt in 49 through 38 BCE as the two seek revenge for the murder of their son. On their journey, they become embroiled in the origins of the Assassin Brotherhood and their enemies, the Order of the Ancients, who go on to become the Templars.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (2018)

Go Even Further Back In Time

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey goes even further back in time than Origins, to 400s BCE Athens and Sparta. The conflict in this game focuses on the Peloponnesian War and follows either Alexios or Kassandra through ancient Greece.

Players are pitted against the mysterious Cult of Kosmos, striving to uncover their secrets. Unlike previous games, which were mostly focused on the overarching storyline of the Assassins vs. Templars, Odyssey is more about the historic and mythological aspects of the time period.
