PlayStation 6 AI Implementation Officially Confirmed

The PlayStation brand just turned 30, and it’s still going strong through its fifth major console iteration, along with a handful of handhelds. Now, our eyes are squarely on the next generation and what Sony will do with the PlayStation 6.

So far, we may have a hint of what the publisher has planned, based on an interview with Digital Foundry.

How Will The PlayStation 6 Use AI?

It Could Change Over Time

Speaking to the group, Mark Cerny, the lead system architect for the Vita, PS4, and PS5, shared new information about emerging tech at Sony. While it’s early days yet, we do have an idea of how Sony will implement some of these tech for the PS5 Pro, and eventually, the PS6.

Cerny said the following when asked how “machine learning-based innovations” will come to future hardware: “Considering that FSR Frame Generation is technology that was co-developed between SIE and AMD, we’re intimately familiar with it. All I can say is that we have no more releases planned for this year. And that I look forward to discussing this more in the future.”

The phrase “bespoke patching” was used to describe the ability for PS5 Pro games to utilize technology, including PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), in this very generation. Shifting gears a bit, the concept of frame-based generation is explored, which essentially adds “faux” frames to projects.

Cerny also gave us some details on future hardware changes: “Just to clarify a few things about the collaboration with AMD, the new PSSR uses the same core co-developed algorithm as FSR Redstone’s Upscaling…FSR Frame Generation is also based on co-developed technology. I’m very happy with how that work is progressing, and an equivalent frame generation library should be seen at some point on PlayStation platforms.”:

It’s entirely possible that Grand Theft Auto 6 on the PS5 Pro could explore these advancements in earnest when it releases later this year. For now, we’ll have to wait for Cerny to reveal more. Sony hasn’t even fully confirmed the details of the PlayStation 6 yet, after all.

When Will The PlayStation 6 Release?

It’s Likely Years Away

Many pundits suggest that the PlayStation 6 won’t be out until late 2027 at the earliest, and that’s if everything goes perfectly. While Sony could be angling for a 2027 holiday release and beating Microsoft to the punch, global memory shortages, pipeline issues, and tariff concerns remain a reality right now.

If the PlayStation 6 does come out next year, it’s going to be a wild time in the industry. There’s a lot of uncertainty, and folks aren’t adopting hardware as quickly in this economy. If nothing changes, Sony could be fighting an uphill battle in terms of stock and sales.
