Mare of Easttown remains one of the best modern additions to the crime thriller genre. While the show’s future after season 1 is still uncertain, Netflix‘s new crime drama seems to fill the void it left behind.
Created and written by Brad Ingelsby for HBO, Mare of Easttown premiered almost five years ago and earned almost unanimous acclaim from viewers and critics. After getting a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 95%, the show even went on to win big during the award season. The show’s wide success made it one of the greatest crime thriller series of the century, and it is hard not to hope it will return with another installment someday.
While only time will tell what the future holds for Mare of Easttown, viewers who miss the show must check out Netflix’s latest crime thriller adaptation.
Mare Of Easttown Season 2’s Future Remains Uncertain, But Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole Can Fill The Void
There have been several mixed reports surrounding Mare of Easttown season 2. The show was initially touted as a miniseries, which suggested that HBO had no plans of bringing it back after season 1. However, recent updates suggest that from being “unlikely,” the show’s return has gradually become “probable.”
Kate Winslet, too, recently dropped some intriguing updates, hinting that Mare of Easttown season 2’s filming could begin in 2027. Unfortunately, without any confirmed announcements from the studio, the show’s future remains at a crossroads. Even if it does see the light of day, it will not come out before 2028. Owing to this, viewers looking for a worthy crime thriller replacement must watch Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole on Netflix.
The new Netflix series has debuted with a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score and is based on Norwegian author Jo Nesbø’s Harry Hole book series. Adapting the fifth installment, The Devil’s Star, from the original series, Detective Hole focuses on a broken titular detective. Like Winslet’s Mare, Tobias Santelmann’s Harry Hole is a classic “lone wolf” battling deep-seated addiction and a self-destructive streak.
Similar to Mare, he is known for being the absolute best at his work, which often proves to be the source of some of his biggest anxieties. He pursues criminal cases with an unrelenting obsession that even makes him lose sleep and incline more towards his self-destructive tendencies.
The main characters in both shows are morally complex and do not even shy away from planting evidence or bribing people for tips. They are both highly respected for their previous work but manage to get suspended after bending too many rules.
Apart from having similar protagonists, Mare of Easttown and Detective Hole also have a deep sense of “place” where they almost make a character out of their central settings.
If All Goes Well, Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole Can Become A Full-Fledged Franchise On Netflix
It remains uncertain whether Mare of Easttown will return in the future. If it does not, it will still be remembered as a near-perfect prestige crime thriller on HBO. Fortunately, for Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole, it seems to have a far better chance of getting renewed for season 2. The show’s source material includes over 10 books.
Since the Netflix series is adapting one Jo Nesbø novel per season, it has enough source material for several follow-ups after season 1.
Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole‘s early critical success further improves its odds of returning. If it proves to be commercially successful on Netflix, the streaming service will likely renew it for at least one more season. It may be too soon to call it a worthy replacement for Mare of Easttown, but it seems to have the potential to become as compelling as the HBO show in its future installments.
