Dango Ouattara scored his first goal for Brentford as Keith Andrews claimed his first Premier League win as manager with a surprise 1-0 victory over Aston Villa.

A 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest last week furthered pre-season expectations of a difficult season for the Bees following the departure of manager Thomas Frank, now at Tottenham, and star forward Bryan Mbuemo.

Yoane Wissa was again left out of the Brentford squad as he seeks to join Mbuemo in leaving the club, the DR Congo forward determined to force through a move to Newcastle United.

But Ouattara, signed from Bournemouth to replace Mbuemo following his move to Manchester United, secured a first win for Andrews.

Ouattara surged through on goal after Caiomhin Kelleher’s long ball was flicked into his path and, after being denied at the first attempt by Emi Martinez, he stayed alive to tuck home the rebound.

Mikkel Damsgaard had a goal disallowed for a foul in the build-up just before half-time, but ultimately it mattered not as Villa remain winless and without a goal.

Burnley 2-0 Sunderland

Burnley and Sunderland experienced contrasting fortunes on the opening day of the season. Scott Parker’s side were beaten 3-0 by Tottenham, while Sunderland beat West Ham by the same scoreline.

But the Black Cats were undone in the clash of two of the three promoted sides.

Parker’s men saw a goal disallowed in the first half, Lyle Foster’s effort chalked off for a foul on Jenson Seelt.

However, Josh Cullen curled a low effort into the bottom-right corner two minutes into the second half and, after withstanding heavy Sunderland pressure, Cullen turned provider as Jaidon Anthony fired into the roof of the net.

Bournemouth 1-0 Wolves

Wolves’ woeful start to the season continued at the Vitality Stadium as Vitor Pereira’s 10 men followed up their 4-0 loss to Manchester City with another defeat on the south coast.

Marcus Tavernier gave Bournemouth the lead with a deflected effort in the fourth minute.

The visitors saw Toti Gomes sent off four minutes into the second half and, though they improved from the first half, Wolves could not find an equaliser.
