Just as Devil Fruits are an integral part of the One Piece mythos, so too is Eiichiro Oda’s dramatic way of revealing a character’s Devil Fruit power. Many a time, One Piece has hidden the ability of a major hero or villain, steadily building hype before the Devil Fruit is finally unveiled in all its glory.

The first appearance of Luffy hitting Gear 5 ranks as the greatest twist in One Piece history, Kaido’s dragon form was suitably epic, Whitebeard’s earth-shattering power proved groundbreaking for its time, and Big Mom harvesting souls felt deeply sinister. All of those epic moments have, however, been eclipsed by a Devil Fruit reveal greater than anything Oda has delivered in One Piece before.

Loki Just Had The Best Devil Fruit Reveal In One Piece History

As Devil Fruit reveals go, it’s hard to think of anything better than Loki’s in One Piece chapter #1174. Oda sets the stage perfectly, with the young giants of Elbaph remembering times they heard about the Sun God – Colon being told to behave because the Sun God is watching, Chief Jarul recalling a prophecy of the Sun God appearing when the sky snows and thunders at the same time…

We then get a deeply emotional scene of Elbaph’s guardians sacrificing themselves alongside their children as the despicable Sommers laughs nearby, making the situation as bleak as possible ahead of the big moment.

Even then, the payoff doesn’t come straight away. The doomed giants tumble onto the stomach of Luffy’s Gomu-Gomu stomach, which appears to be perched atop the surface of some black floating island. Cleverly, readers are invited to join the dots at this point – Luffy must be in his gigantic form in order to catch the falling giants, yet he’s still nothing compared to whatever surface is underneath. The wait gives a true sense of scale.

Finally, the gradual peeling back of layers culminates in the full appearance of Loki as a giant dragon dominating the sky. Of course, One Piece doesn’t lose its trademark humor here, with Ragnir the squirrel hopping around and giant Gear 5 Luffy laughing uncontrollably about Loki’s size.

It’s the perfect reveal, especially after so many chapters of speculation and teasing. Oda brings emotion via the young giants and their guardians, the punch-the-air-moment via Luffy catching them in midair, the mystery via glimpsing Loki’s back before the rest of him, and then the author successfully captures the scale of Loki’s dragon form in the final panel. Devil Fruit unveilings don’t get much better.

Could Any One Piece Character Get A Better Devil Fruit Reveal Than Loki?

It’s difficult to think of any One Piece character that could one day get a better Devil Fruit reveal chapter than Loki. In terms of villains, it’s unlikely that Imu’s power will be as simple as having one single Devil Fruit. Shamrock or Garling could potentially get a big moment if either of them possess Devil Fruit powers, and Blackbeard might spring another surprise after combining the Yami Yami and Gura Gura fruits.

But the character with by far the best chance of beating Loki’s Devil Fruit reveal is Monkey D. Dragon. One Piece first teased Dragon’s powers way back during the Loguetown arc – so long ago, it’s soon being adapted in live-action for Netflix’s One Piece season 2. Dragon could have a weather-based Logia fruit or a mythical Zoan – the mystery stands unsolved. And compared to Loki, the hints and speculation have been going on far, far longer.

The moment Oda reveals the true nature of Dragon’s fruit will be one of the most eagerly-anticipated scenes in One Piece history, and could, therefore, receive more pomp and circumstance than Loki’s Devil Fruit scene in chapter #1174. Until then, Loki holds the honor of having the most impressive and impactful Devil Fruit reveal in all of One Piece.
