The Nintendo Switch 2 has just passed another major milestone in its incredible debut year, but it won’t assuage concerns of an imminent price increase. Nintendo already increased the price of physical games for the Switch 2 a couple of weeks ago, and previously raised accessory prices before the console’s launch in response to various economic factors, including tariffs imposed by the U.S. federal government, which Nintendo started a lawsuit over.
Despite worldwide financial volatility, the Nintendo Switch 2 has remained incredibly popular among consumers, and just surpassed five million hardware unit sales in its home market of Japan, according to data from Japanese outlet Famitsu. The Switch 2 was already the fastest-selling gaming console in history, and appears to have lost very little steam as it approaches its first anniversary this June. Nintendo is expected to issue a price increase, though, which could potentially harm the Switch 2’s momentum.
Nintendo Switch 2 Hits 5 Million Sales In Japan
Famitsu‘s sales numbers are estimated, but are considered generally reliable in its domestic market. We won’t have any official data until Nintendo decides to divulge it, and the company typically only does so occasionally. For instance, the last and only time Switch 2 sales data was released was at the very end of 2025, and even then, it was only worldwide figures (17.37 million sales worldwide, if you’re curious).
Perhaps the most interesting part of Famitsu‘s data is that all PlayStation 5 models – also in their domestic market – have sold an estimated, cumulative 7.5 million units in Japan. In less than a year, the Switch 2 has sold two-thirds the number of units that the PS5 has in over five years. The PS5 is still well ahead worldwide, but if the original Switch is any indication, and considering the Switch 2’s start, Nintendo may be on track for another bestseller.
A Price Increase For Switch 2 Is Probably Still Coming
The remaining quagmire for the Switch 2 is an expected price increase. Nintendo has not announced whether the console will increase its MSRP, but a bump is expected after Sony raised the PlayStation 5’s prices. Recent price increases are being caused by the RAM shortage (all available stock is being bought up by AI companies), which, unlike the tariff issues from last year, seems unlikely to be remedied by further increases to peripherals.
While a price increase would not be received well by consumers, it likely wouldn’t be as lambasted as the PS5’s, which came more than five years into its life cycle, when consoles would typically start growing cheaper. That said, there’s still a chance Nintendo decides to ride out the RAM shortage and keep the Switch 2’s price where it is – the company could bank on its strong software sales continuing. The Nintendo Switch 2 has a lot of momentum both domestically and abroad, but only Nintendo knows where its financials are currently.
