Newcastle v Barcelona – Line-ups revealed as St James’ Park hosts Spanish giants


Chelsea are the only English team to have lost their Champions League opener so far this week, but Newcastle face a mighty task when Barcelona come to town.

The Spanish champions look as formidable as ever under Hansi Flick but a few key absences may mean the Magpies have a chance in their home fortress.

Notably, Lamine Yamal misses out due to a pubic injury, meaning Marcus Rashford could return to England and haunt the Toon.

In a boost for the hosts, Anthony Gordon is available, with his red card not carrying over into European competitions.

Newcastle line-up

Eddie Howe may not have Yoane Wissa available yet, but there is still plenty of attacking power available.

As usual, Nick Pope is in goal for the hosts, and will be relying on a back four of Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar, Dan Burn and Tino Livramento.

The formidable midfield three all start – Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton.

Ahead, Anthony Elanga is on the right wing, and Harvey Barnes fills in on the left.

Barcelona line-up

Barcelona may be missing their star winger, but their team is still frightening on paper.

Joan Garcia remains in goal with Marc-Andre Ter Stegen not back yet.

Jules Kounde is at right back, alongside Ronald Araujo, Pau Cubarsi, and Gerard Martin.

In midfield, the brilliant Pedro plays alongside Frenkie de Jong.

Marcus Rashford and Raphinha occupy the wide spaces, with Fermin Lopez playing in the No.10 role.

Veteran striker Robert Lewandowski is the lone striker.
