New Super Mario Galaxy Movie Tie-In Game Officially Releases Today

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is getting a game adaptation, but not one that you can play on the Nintendo Switch 2. Instead, the new film from Nintendo and Illumination is headed to the tabletop space today, as Screen Rant can exclusively reveal.

Monopoly: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie edition will be available today at Target, Walmart, and Amazon for a suggested retail price of $24.99. This new take on Monopoly gives the game’s familiar elements a Super Mario Galaxy spin, with various locations from the film taking the place of traditional properties and coins standing in for Monopoly money. The game can be played by two to six players and is suggested for ages eight and up.

Super Mario Galaxy Gets A Monopoly Edition

Like most editions of Monopoly, a lot of the fun to be had here lies in seeing how The Super Mario Galaxy Movie version transforms typical Monopoly staples. Railroads become launch stars in this edition, for example, and Community Chest cards are replaced with the volatile whims of “Bowser Jr.’s Rage.” A selection of plastic tokens represents Mario characters with pieces of iconography:

  • Mario’s cap
  • Luigi’s cap
  • Peach’s umbrella
  • Rosalina’s Luma
  • Yoshi’s egg
  • Toad’s headlamp

The iconic properties at the end of the line, Park Place and Boardwalk, have been re-assigned as Bowser’s Prison and Comet Observatory. Some locations, like the library, should be familiar to those who played the Super Mario Galaxy games, while others are original to the film adaptation. In typical Monopoly fashion, the four corner square are all unaltered, so Free Parking is still available in outer space.

It’s A Great Time To Be A Mario Fan

This isn’t the first Mario edition of Monopoly, following a previous tie-in for The Super Mario Bros. Movie and several editions based on the video game franchise. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie version follows the lead set by its predecessor’s Bowser token, which moves around the game board to provide an extra challenge. This time, Bowser Jr.’s starring role in the film means he also gets to take the lead as the board game threat.

I’m sure we’ll be seeing plenty more products related to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie over the coming weeks, but if you know a fan, this might be one of the most reliable buys. Monopoly, after all, has stood the test of time. Just remember to set aside a healthy chunk of that time if you want to actually finish a game, especially if you’re throwing a lot of house rules into the mix.
