41 years after the original Back to the Future movie came to theaters, a new project from the franchise featuring Michael J. Fox is being released.

While Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale have done everything in their power to prevent Back to the Future 4 from happening, they have been in favor of Back to the Future: The Musical. The stage production, which is based on the story of the original 1985 movie, debuted in the West End before coming to Broadway, adapted by Zemeckis and Gale, and Roger Bart playing Doc Brown. After closing on Broadway, the show began a national tour across the United States of America.

Now, Deadline has revealed that a feature-length documentary about the musical, featuring Fox, will be available to watch on Prime Video, Apple TV, YouTube, and other platforms as of March 24. The documentary, which is titled A Future on Stage, is directed by Brian Stillman and includes interviews from Fox, Zemeckis, and Gale, along with actors and key creative individuals involved with the making of the musical. Bob Gale: Having Back to the Future the Musical playing to sold-out houses around the world is a future I never could have predicted. I thought getting the movie off the ground was insanely difficult, but getting the musical version on stage was even harder, and this documentary really captures what we all went through.

Along with Fox, Zemeckis, and Gale, Bart will be in the documentary, as will Broadway cast members Casey Likes, Liana Hunt, Jelani Remy, Nathaniel Hackmann, Mikaela Secada, and Merrit David Janes. More behind-the-scenes insight will be provided by director John Rando, producer Colin Ingram, and production designer Tim Hatley. Likes played Marty McFly on Broadway, and in the documentary trailer, Fox speaks about how impressed he was with the actor’s performance. The trailer also teases the long and difficult road to getting the musical made, and how, at certain points, it seemed like it would never happen.

Back to the Future: The Musical won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical for its West End run. After coming to Broadway, the musical received Tony Award nominations for Best Scenic Design in a Musical and Best Featured Actor in a Musical, with the latter in recognition of Bart’s portrayal of Doc Brown.

Two years ago, Zemeckis shared that he wants to make Back to the Future: The Musical into a movie, akin to what Mel Brooks did with The Producers. He revealed that he had already pitched the idea to Universal but that “they don’t get it.” This update came before the critical and commercial success of Wicked, which is also a Universal movie, but it is unknown whether the studio’s stance has changed on a Back to the Future: The Musical film.

In addition to seeing Fox talk about Back to the Future and its musical adaptation in A Future on Stage, he can be seen in Shrinking season 3 on Apple TV. New episodes are still being released of the latest season, which feature Fox as Gerry, a man with Parkinson’s disease who becomes friendly with Paul (Harrison Ford), who also has Parkinson’s. Christopher Lloyd, who played Doc Brown in the movies, recently played Professor Orloff in season 2 of the hit Netflix series Wednesday, and reprised the role of David Mansell in Bob Odenkirk’s Nobody 2.
