Boots has quickly become a major Netflix streaming hit. The cast of characters in Boots is led by Cameron Cope (Miles Heizer), who joins the American military in the 1990s and hides that he is gay. Cameron joins the military alongside his best friend, Ray McAffey (Liam Oh), who is straight.
With a 92% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, the reviews for Boots have been exceedingly positive. The show has received praise for being genuinely moving, unpredictable, and Heizer’s leading performance has garnered considerable acclaim.
In addition to being a critical hit, Boots is now in the third spot on Netflix’s global charts, less than a week after the show’s October 9 debut. The military drama is in the Netflix top 10 for 73 different countries and is ahead of the recently released Victoria Beckham docuseries, The Hunting Wives, and Wayward. It is only behind Monster: The Ed Gein Story and the drama series Old Money.
Along with the strong reviews and high viewership, the general audience response has been positive, with a Popcornmeter score of 85%. As good word of mouth continues to spread, Boots could climb further up the charts, ascending into second place and possibly even dethroning Monster season 3 from the top spot.
Boots‘ ending sets up season 2, and the global response indicates that audiences want to see that setup pay off with more episodes. There is plenty of material to further explore with a military drama set in the 1990s, including how Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell affects Cameron. It was enacted in 1993, while Boots season 1 takes place in 1990.
The positive response, streaming numbers, and more narrative potential bode well for a season 2 renewal, as long as the series is able to maintain its momentum on Netflix’s charts in the coming weeks. Netflix now tends to only renew shows that stay in the top 10 for numerous weeks after premiering.
In addition to the existing competition, Netflix has several high-profile series coming later in October, including Nobody Wants This season 2 on October 23 and The Witcher season 4 on October 30. Boots is unlikely to compete with these popular series, but it can still keep a strong foothold in the top 10.
After canceling I Am Not Okay With This, Uncoupled, and other shows with LGBTQ+ representation, Netflix has been criticized in the past. The streamer is likely to face similar criticism if it cancels Boots, but so far, all signs point to Netflix renewing the show instead of canceling it.
