My Hero Academia is one of the best shonen series ever created, with a unique premise centered around superpowered individuals with a variety of different abilities called Quirks. The series has a lot going for it, but despite all of its well-written arcs, compelling characters, and heroic moments, there are a few details in My Hero Academia that are not so great.

Each Pro Hero in My Hero Academia has a hero name, which serves as an alter ego and the title the public calls them. From All Might to Eraserhead, the series contains an abundance of creative hero names that give viewers a glimpse into the person’s Quirk and personality. Not every nickname was created equal though, and one hero name in particular is not the best fit for the character it was given to.

Shinso Deserves a Better Hero Name Than the One He Has

Nighthide Is Not a Very Fitting Name For Shinso’s Brainwashing Quirk

Shinso Hitoshi, one of U.A. High’s most talented Hero Course students, goes by the hero name “Nighthide”. While Nighthide is a mysterious-sounding and cool name, many fans have agreed that it does not mesh well with Shinso’s Quirk or personality. The best hero names in the series tell a story about the character without having to know anything about them beforehand. For example, “Uravity,” Ochaco Uraraka’s hero name, is a perfect nickname because it blends her name, Uraraka, and her Quirk, Zero Gravity, making it crystal clear what her skill is and what types of attacks she specializes in.

Other My Hero Academia hero names like Froppy (Tsuyu Asui), Dynamight (Bakugo Katsuki), and Earphone Jack (Kyoka Jiro) are clever choices because, just from hearing the hero name alone, fans can immediately picture the character that the nickname corresponds to. Nighthide does not have this same effect, because it could apply to so many different heroes and is ultimately pretty vague. Shinso’s hero name actually was not even a part of the main My Hero Academia manga, and was recently unveiled in the My Hero Academia epilogue for the first time, clearing up the mystery surrounding his nickname.

“Mockingbird” or “Mindjack” Would Suit Shinso and His Quirk Much Better

The long-awaited grand reveal of Shinso’s hero name in My Hero Academia’s epilogue was pretty controversial among fans, with many viewers offering alternative suggestions for Shinso’s hero name because they felt his given one did not suit him or his Quirk. Shinso’s Quirk, Brainwashing, is fairly simple but extremely effective, and does exactly what the name suggests, allowing him to hypnotize his opponents into behaving how he wants them to. The name Nighthide does not represent this Quirk very well, since it does not incorporate the hypnosis and mind control elements of Shinso’s Quirk at all.

Some of the best suggestions fans have made for Shinso’s new hero name are Mockingbird and Mindjack, two names that embody his Brainwashing Quirk ability more meaningful than Nighthide. Mockingbirds mimic the sounds and songs of other animals, so this quality makes Mockingbird a perfect name for Shinso, since his Brainwashing Quirk compels his opponents to “mimic” whatever behaviors he influences them to. Mindjack has a similar meaning, alluding to the fact that he controls his enemies’ minds. Both of these genius suggestions fit Shinso and his Quirk much better than Nighthide, proving this My Hero Academia hero deserves a name change pronto.
