MTG’s PlayStation Secret Lair Drop: Iconic Video Game Crossovers

Following the latest Spider-Man Universes Beyond collaboration, Wizards of the Coast is already looking ahead at what the future of Magic: The Gathering will bring in the new year. Even if we already know what to expect from the MTG scene in 2026, that doesn’t mean there aren’t any exciting updates to look forward to in the months ahead.

While most eyes were on the upcoming set reveals for The Hobbit, Marvel, and Star Trek, one incredibly unique Secret Lair collaboration went relatively under the radar in comparison. Bringing forth some of the most iconic characters in video game history, the next month has several major surprises in store from MTG that you don’t want to miss out on.

MTG’s PlayStation Secret Lair Drop Is One Of Its Most Ambitious

Incredibly Flavorful Cards For Sony’s Iconic Heroes

Rather than having to wait another year for the announced collaboration content, MTG is offering an exclusive crossover with a PlayStation-themed Secret Lair superdrop to tie you over in the meantime. Releasing even before the upcoming Avatar set, on October 27, seven individual Secret Lair drops will be released, each themed after an iconic Sony video game franchise.

Although some franchises, like God of War and The Last of Us, were fortunate enough to get two sets of their own, both highlight alternative eras of the franchise that seem likely to feel drastically different to play.

Despite attempting to hide the rest of the full cards in the PlayStation superdrop until closer to release, some MTG players were quick to notice that the Secret Lair site accidentally showed them in advance, even if they were quickly removed from the site. Despite the technical mix-up, the full reveal has raised even more excitement for some great reprints and thematic additions that fit perfectly with their respective franchises.

PlayStation Has Plenty To Offer With MTG Moving Forward

Sparking Hope For More Secret Lair Drops To Come

Someone is touching Norman Reedus in Death Stranding game

Out of all the properties, I’m most excited to see what comes next to MTG with Sony, particularly with its potential Universes Beyond collaborations. PlayStation’s endless roster of games has excellent potential for even more thematic crossovers. Having already collaborated with Yoji Shinkawa in the past for a secret lair, the revived popularity of games like Death Stranding could easily offer creative color combinations to enjoy for fans of the series and MTG players alike.

Regardless of some disappointment over franchises like Bloodborne not making an appearance, the actual cards themselves are incredibly flavorful additions that I absolutely can’t wait to see in action. Setting a high bar with its creative use of the Partner mechanic and other abilities that fit perfectly into the commander format, opening the floodgates to see what deck combinations players will create using the cards as a base.

With the massive success behind Final Fantasy‘s crossover offering plenty of incentive for more Magic: The Gathering collaborations with video game properties, hopefully, this isn’t the last time we see Sony take the plunge with more innovative card drops, while also potentially inspiring other industry giants like Xbox or Nintendo to join the mix for some incredibly iconic crossovers.
