Millwall boss Neil relieved to ease pressure after earning first home win

Alex Neil was relieved to lift the pressure from the Millwall faithful after steering his side to their first Championship home win in 2025-26 against Watford.

Millwall were one of five sides in the second tier yet to register a point on home soil coming into this clash, but they were able to break that stretch with a 1-0 victory on Monday.

The decisive moment came in the 10th minute from Camiel Neghli, whose stunning free-kick from just outside the box nestled into the top-right corner of Egil Selvik’s net.

The Lions’ victory propelled them up to 10th in the Championship standings, while Watford, who are without a win in four league games, are languishing down in 21st.

It was a game that saw clear-cut chances hard to come by, with Watford marginally edging the expected goals (xG) battle, registering a tally of 0.73 to Millwall’s 0.7.

Neil, however, believed his side were worthy of all three points, with a trip to Wales to take on Swansea City this Saturday their next Championship assignment.

“We hadn’t won here in the league, so that always puts pressure on,” Neil said. “In the first half we were good value and played well.

“The second half was more gritty in terms of hanging on – some of them were on their last legs, especially with injuries, which makes it difficult to get freshness on.

“I do think we should have had a penalty late on. I might be proven wrong – I haven’t seen it back – but it looked stonewall.

“We deserved the points over the piece, albeit in a tight game.”
