Mikel Arteta to pick 24-year-old as striker vs Port Vale?

Martinelli to play as a striker vs Port Vale?

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta could pick Gabriel Martinelli to lead the line during the Carabao Cup third round tie against Port Vale on the road tomorrow.

The Gunners have had a good start to the Premier League campaign with 10 points from five games. They played out a 1-1 draw against Manchester City last weekend and now need to return to winning ways at Vale Park.

Ahead of the game, Arteta could contemplate a change upfront. Viktor Gyokeres could be handed a breather, considering he is the only specialist striker in the squad amid injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

Martinelli came on as a substitute against Athletic Bilbao last week and scored after just 36 seconds. He played centrally and made the perfect run behind the defence before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Unai Simon.

The 24-year-old replicated the performance against Manchester City. With minutes left on the clock, he made a clever run behind the backline as a striker before lobbing the ball beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma.

With Gyokeres likely to be rested, it could be time for Arteta to start Martinelli as a central striker against League One outfit Port Vale.
