Warning! Spoilers ahead for Rogue Storm #1!
Rogue is leading the X-Men franchise’s intense new incarnation of X-Force on a mission to take down Storm, as Marvel’s Age of Revelation event continues to turn mutantkind’s world upside down. Rogue’s squad is stacked with heavy-hitters, Omega-level mutants, surprise choices, and a few new faces, ready to make an impact.
Rogue Storm #1 is written by Murewa Ayodele, with art by Roland Boschi. Rogue’s squad is stacked with efficient killers, like Warpath and Fantomex, and powerful mutants such as Gateway and Iceman.
The team also features Akujin, who makes her debut in this issue. However, not everyone makes it out of the miniseries’ premiere alive.
Rogue’s New X-Force Team Is Stacked With Powerful And Dangerous Mutant Heroes
Rogue Storm #1, Written By Murewa Ayodele, Art By Roland Boschi; Available Now From Marvel Comics
X-Force is the edgier, deadlier counterpart to the main X-Men squad. Initially founded by the time-traveling mutant Cable, Wolverine has also led several memorable incarnations of the team. During X-Men’s Krakoan Era, X-Force was expanded into the nation’s intelligence service, or “mutant CIA,” by Beast. Rogue’s team brings X-Force back to its roots: assassination.
The full line-up of the team includes “Red Rogue,” a duplicate of the original Rogue; her longtime colleague Iceman; Warpath, an alumni of several prior X-Force teams; the gun-for-hire known as Fantomex; new mutant Akujin, making her debut; and the teleporter Gateway, who is the squad’s surprise casualty in Rogue Storm #1.
In a bizarre touch, Red Rogue’s X-Force rides into battle mounted on mutated dinosaur creatures which chant “WAR” as they go. It is a strange but effective worldbuilding element, which highlights how hardcore the team actually is, as they race toward a confrontation Storm’s minions, fighting their way toward their former ally on a deadly mission.
In Just A Few Issues, Rogue’s Team Is Prepared To Live Up To The Bloody Legacy Of X-Force
A New Contender For “Most Hardcore” Line-Up
Rogue Storm #1 doesn’t revel in bloodshed, the way some volumes of X-Force have in the past, but it is no less brutal for it. Gateway is promptly killed off, denying the squad their quick exit strategy, but by the end of the issue, Rogue Red and her team are still on “her quest to murder her dearest friend.”
Marvel has established Storm as one of its most powerful characters, mutant or otherwise, over the past few years. Her descent into madness makes her a huge threat, prompting Rogue and X-Force to take on their mission. It also means they’re far from guaranteed success, nor even survival. It’s likely Gateway was just the first member of the team to fall.
Rogue Storm is slated to run for just three issues, meaning readers’ time with this iteration of X-Force will be limited, but in that brief span, they may still very well prove themselves to be among the most intense, uncompromising teams to ever go by that name in X-Men history.
Rogue Storm #1 is available now from Marvel Comics.
