Meet David Payne: Veteran England left-armer stepping in as Jack Edwards’ replacement for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2026

In the competitive world of franchise cricket, opportunities can come suddenly. When Australian all-rounder Jack Edwards suffered a foot injury and was ruled out of the entire IPL 2026 season, Sunrisers Hyderabad quickly turned to a seasoned campaigner. They signed 35-year-old England left-arm seamer David Payne as his replacement for ₹1.5 crore. Payne has already linked up with the squad ahead of SRH’s opening clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 28.

Payne brings a wealth of T20 experience and proven big-match temperament. Known for his clever variations and effective powerplay bowling, he arrives with fresh momentum after strong shows in the Big Bash League and ILT20.

Early life and domestic career

Born on February 15, 1991, in Dorset, England, Payne grew up with a love for swing bowling. He made his first-class debut for Gloucestershire way back in 2011 and has been a consistent performer for the county over the years. Like many English seamers, he faced his share of injury setbacks early on, which limited his international chances to just one ODI appearance for England (against the Netherlands in 2022).

Despite the challenges, Payne never gave up. He continued to hone his skills, especially in the shorter formats, and gradually built a reputation as a reliable death bowler with a tricky slower ball.

Payne has played 233 T20 matches and picked up an impressive 304 wickets at an average of around 21 and an economy rate under 8.10. Two years ago, he was the leading wicket-taker in the Vitality Blast with 33 scalps, helping Gloucestershire lift the title.

His recent form has been even better. In the 2025-26 Big Bash League with Perth Scorchers, he took 11 wickets in just 6 games at a superb average of 13.54 and economy of 6.47. He played a starring role in the final, claiming 3 for 18 to help his team win the trophy. He was also part of the Desert Vipers squad that won the ILT20 in January 2026.

This will be Payne’s first stint in the Indian Premier League. SRH had originally bought Edwards for ₹3 crore in the auction, but the injury forced a change. Payne’s experience in powerplays and his ability to bowl at different stages of the innings made him an ideal fit for a Sunrisers side that already boasts a strong pace attack including Pat Cummins (recovering from injury), Harshal Patel and others.

His left-arm angle offers variety against right-handed batters, and his clever variations could prove useful on Indian pitches. At 35, Payne knows this could be one of his last big opportunities on the global stage, and he looks ready to make it count.

David Payne’s big break in IPL 2026

As SRH prepare for another title challenge, David Payne steps into a squad that values experienced overseas pacers. With Edwards unavailable, the England seamer will be expected to provide control in the powerplay and handle pressure situations in the middle and death overs.

From county grounds in England to the bright lights of the IPL, Payne’s journey shows that age is just a number when form and skill align. SRH fans will be hoping the “Dorset Express” can deliver those crucial breakthroughs and help the Orange Army start the season on a high.
