Perhaps the most iconic catchphrase in Marvel Comics history comes from the Fantastic Four‘s The Thing, who famously says, “It’s clobberin’ time!” throughout his Marvel career. But now, Marvel Comics has changed the Thing’s catchphrase, and this change is almost guaranteed to be included in the MCU.
In Marvel Zombies: Red Band #1 by Ethan S. Parker, Griffin Sheridan, and Jan Bazaldua, the entire Marvel Universe is rewritten, beginning with the creation of the Fantastic Four. When the four went into space, they didn’t just return with powers. They were all also infected with a zombie virus.
As the world waited to greet these space adventurers, they were horrified to see what had become of them and what would become of the world. The zombified Fantastic Four attacked and consumed those at the landing platform, inspiring The Thing to utter his new catchphrase, “It’s gobblin’ time!“
The Thing’s New Catchphrase is a Complete Corruption of His Character
The Thing’s original catchphrase, “It’s clobberin’ time“, perfectly encapsulated his character and his heroic brand. The Thing utilizes his powers to combat the forces of evil, and his catchphrase perfectly captures how dangerous he is to villains while also making it clear that he poses no danger to the public.
There’s something almost childish about The Thing’s catchphrase to the people he protects, while also being incredibly threatening to those he attacks. That’s why it’s a perfect catchphrase, and why his new one corrupts The Thing so entirely.
“It’s gobblin’ time” is a ghoulish change, since it conveys The Thing’s threat level just as adequately. Before, The Thing’s catchphrase simultaneously told good people they were safe and bad people they were in danger. Now, The Thing’s new catchphrase suggests that The Thing intends to consume those around him.
The Thing’s New Catchphrase is Sure to Come to the MCU
The Thing made his MCU debut in Fantastic Four: First Steps, and he’ll return in future projects (like Avengers: Doomsday/Avengers: Secret Wars). That means The Thing is free to appear in the upcoming Marvel Zombies animated series, at which point, he’ll be free to use his new, twisted catchphrase.
If The Thing appears in the Marvel Zombies animated series on Disney+, there’s no doubt he’ll use his new catchphrase. But, even if he doesn’t appear in the show, the Fantastic Four‘s The Thing still changed his iconic catchphrase in Marvel Comics, and it’s absolutely terrifying.
