Marshals Trailer Hints At Monica Dutton’s Death

The Yellowstone franchise is set to expand with the spinoff Y: Marshals, but it seems as though one original character won’t survive the transition from show to show. The Dutton family hasn’t exactly had the best luck, as many members have died. From Elsa Dutton in 1883 to John Dutton III in the flagship series, the family has suffered numerous tragic deaths.

Even though Yellowstone has ended, creator and showrunner Taylor Sheridan isn’t done with the franchise quite yet. Various spinoffs are in development, including Y: Marshals, which is expected to premiere in 2026 on CBS and follow Kayce Dutton’s life after the events of the Yellowstone series finale. Unfortunately, one person close to Kayce won’t be around for his new adventures.

The Y: Marshals Trailer Fuels The Theory That Monica Dutton Is Dead

Kelsey Asbille Won’t Appear In The Yellowstone Spinoff

The premiere of Y: Marshals may be a ways away, but CBS has already released a first look at the upcoming spinoff. While it’s exciting to see Kayce back in action, one can’t help but note Monica Dutton’s absence in the teaser. Instead, the video mostly shows Luke Grimes’ Yellowstone character as he takes on a new role as a U.S. Marshal.

In the sneak peek, Kayce can be heard in a voiceover. He says that he’s “changing paths” and “trying to find a new beginning,” and both comments tease why the youngest Dutton sibling decides to become a U.S. Marshal. Outside of that, though, nothing is certain about Kayce’s future. However, we do know that Monica evidently won’t be around to witness it.

After learning that Kelsey Asbille wouldn’t reprise her role as Monica in the spinoff, some fans speculated that Kayce’s wife is dead. It doesn’t help that CBS has confirmed Brecken Merrill’s return as Kayce and Monica’s son, Tate. Now, the first footage from Y: Marshals only fuels the theory that Monica dies sometime in between the Yellowstone series finale and the offshoot’s pilot.

Perhaps Kayce wants a fresh start in Y: Marshals because he’s grieving the death of his wife. A career change would certainly do the trick. Only time will tell what actually convinces Kayce to become a U.S. Marshal in the upcoming Yellowstone spinoff, though.

As mentioned above, Y: Marshals‘ story is still mostly a mystery. All we know is that after selling the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch to Chief Thomas Rainwater (played by Gil Birmingham, who is also expected to appear in the spinoff) and the Broken Rock Reservation, Kayce becomes a U.S. Marshal. He will belong to a specialized group tasked with protecting Montana.

Aside from Grimes, Merrill, and Birmingham, Mo Brings Plenty will reprise his role as Mo in the series. Rounding out the cast are Arielle Kebbel as Belle, Ash Santos as Andrea, Tatanka Means as Miles, and Logan Marshall-Green as Pete Calvin. As Y: Marshals‘ release date (which CBS has yet to specify) gets closer, fans will learn more, including whether Monica is dead.
