Manchester United reached the quarter-finals of the Women’s Champions League for the first time with a 2-0 home win over Atletico Madrid, which clinched a 5-0 aggregate success.
Having built a three-goal lead in last week’s first leg in Spain, United were never troubled following first-half goals from Julia Zigiotti Olme and Jessica Park, and Bayern Munich now await them in the last eight.
Atleti missed some decent openings early on at Leigh Sports Village, but the tie was effectively over when Zigiotti Olme swept past Lola Gallardo after being fed by Lisa Naalsund in the 28th minute.
Gallardo arguably should have done better for that goal, but she was rooted to the spot when Park picked out the top-right corner from the edge of the area in the 41st minute.
Gallardo made a fine save to deny Ellen Wangerheim and Park struck the foot of the post as United chased more goals in the second half, and Atleti’s woes were compounded when Xenia Perez received her second yellow card for dragging down Wangerheim late on.

In Thursday’s other game, Wolfsburg teed up a quarter-final clash with Lyon by winning 2-0 at Juventus, eliminating the Bianconeri 4-2 on aggregate.
Having recovered from a two-goal deficit to draw their home leg, Wolfsburg saw Vivien Endemann cap a flowing move to put them ahead on aggregate in the 18th minute.
Ana Capeta’s overhead kick struck the woodwork as Juventus pushed for a route back into the tie, but Cora Zicai made certain of victory when her stoppage-time strike flew in off the underside of the crossbar.
Data Debrief: United into last eight at first time of asking
Man Utd are only the second English team to reach the quarter-finals in their debut season in the Women’s Champions League, after Manchester City in 2016-17 (excluding teams who debuted before the format changed in 2009-10).
Marc Skinner’s side have kept five clean sheets in the competition this term – the only team to keep more in their debut campaign in the competition is City in 2016-17 (six).
