Luis Enrique insisted “there’s no favourite at this stage” of the Champions League as Paris Saint-Germain prepare to host Liverpool in the first leg of their quarter-final tie.
The reigning champions welcome the Reds to the Parc des Princes on Wednesday, looking to knock out another English side after defeating Chelsea 8-2 on aggregate in the last 16.
PSG are unbeaten in their last six Champions League games against English sides (W5 D1), and have progressed from all four of their knockout stage ties against English opponents since the start of last season (versus Liverpool, Aston Villa, Arsenal and Chelsea).
The two sides also met in the last 16 in 2024-25 as PSG overcame Liverpool 4-1 on penalties after the tie finished 1-1 across the two legs.
In last season’s tie, Liverpool averaged just 38.6% possession and had 14 fewer shots on target than PSG across the two legs (four for, 18 against); it is their biggest negative shot-on-target differential in a Champions League knockout-stage tie on record (since 2003-04).
Luis Enrique believes PSG would be playing a dangerous game if they see themselves as favourites against Liverpool heading into the first leg.
“On Wednesday, it’ll be important to show that desire to play football, to enjoy the Parc, the fans, the atmosphere,” said the PSG boss.

“It’s the most important thing for us and our fans: to give 100%.
“What will the result be? We’ll see. Last season, we put in one of our best performances, but we lost. Liverpool were favourites, and PSG qualified.
“There’s no favourite at this stage of the competition. It’s important to look to control what we can control.
“Liverpool are a very high-level team, and to think you’re the favourites is the best way to make a mess of things.
“It’s not important to know who’s the favourite in this competition, in this kind of game. It’s impossible that there’s a favourite. For me, there isn’t one.”
