Lincoln City earn promotion to second tier for first time in 65 years

Lincoln City have secured promotion to the Championship after a stoppage-time winner over Reading confirmed their return to the second tier for the first time in 65 years.

A point would have been enough for Michael Skubala’s side, but Jack Moylan ensured all three with a strike deep into added time.

The result leaves Lincoln with an unassailable gap over third place in League One, confirming their place in the 2026-27 Championship campaign.

Lincoln’s rise marks the end of a lengthy absence from the second tier, stretching back to 1961. In that time, the club dropped as low as non-league level before rebuilding and steadily progressing through the divisions.

Under Skubala, appointed in 2023, they boast one of the strongest records at both ends of the pitch in the division. Their home form has also been a key factor, with just a single defeat all season.

Promotion follows several near misses in recent years, including play-off disappointment and narrowly missing out on the top six, but this campaign has seen them take a decisive step forward.

Lincoln made a bright start against Reading on Monday and took the lead through a free-kick, though there were questions over whether it should have been kept out.

The hosts eventually drew level through Wing’s well-struck free-kick from distance, setting up a nervy conclusion.

However, in the final moments, Moylan reacted quickest in the box to fire home and spark celebrations among the travelling supporters.
