Star Trek: Picard ended 3 years ago, and fans still clamor for Star Trek: Legacy. However, one iconic Star Trek: The Next Generation actor tells fans why they should not hold their breath about Star Trek: Legacy, the proposed continuation of Star Trek: Picard about the USS Enterprise-G.

Star Trek: Picard season 3’s ending teed up newly promoted Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) to lead the next Starship Enterprise, alongside Commander Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd), Ensign Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), and the young cast that Star Trek: Picard season 3 introduced. Despite rabid fan support, Star Trek: Legacy was never in development at Paramount+.

YouTuber UltimatDJz Playz shared Star Trek: The Next Generation’s panel at the Star Trek Cruise, with Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, John de Lancie, and Denise Crosby, moderated by Todd Stashwick. When a fan asked what the actors want to see from their characters if Star Trek: Legacy happens, Sirtis threw cold water on the idea of Star Trek: Picard’s spinoff seeing the light of day. Marina Sirtis: “First of all, Legacy is never gonna happen.”

Jonathan Frakes: “Come on, Marina!”

Marina Sirtis: “You know, you hate hearing the truth. There is not a single studio in America that is gonna make a series where most of the leading actors are over 70 years old. I’m sorry, but that’s just the truth. It’s just Hollywood.”

Martina Sirtis has a point that it’s not likely a studio or streaming service would invest in a cast of aged actors. However, Star Trek: Legacy wouldn’t be about Star Trek: The Next Generation’s cast, but rather Captain Seven of Nine and her crew, including Jack Crusher, Lt. Sidney La Forge (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut), and Ensign Alandra La Forge (Mica Burton).

Ideally, Star Trek: The Next Generation’s legends like Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, and perhaps even Patrick Stewart would be special guest stars in Star Trek: Legacy. Jonathan Frakes hoped that Will Riker could be the Admiral who gives Captain Seven and her Enterprise their orders.

Jonathan Frakes is an “eternal optimist” about Star Trek and objected to Marina Sirtis’ pessimism. Looking at Star Trek: Legacy from an optimistic standpoint, it’s still possible Paramount Skydance could see the immense value of Star Trek: Legacy as they plan the future direction of Star Trek on Paramount+’s TV franchise.

However, from the fans’ and the actors who worked on Star Trek: Picard‘s point of view, Star Trek: Legacy would also be dependent on Terry Matalas returning as showrunner and creative mastermind. Matalas has a full plate with Marvel Studios’ VisionQuest and Netflix’s Magic: The Gathering, though his love for Star Trek could lure him back if Paramount+ called.

The desire for Star Trek: Legacy from fans has not waned. Star Trek: Picard season 3 was arguably the most acclaimed iteration of Star Trek on Paramount+ among critics and fans, and Picard’s final season also ranked high in Nielsen’s streaming charts. Time will tell if Marina Sirtis is proven right that Star Trek: Legacy will “never” happen, but there are always possibilities.
