Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) announces replacement of Harshit Rana for IPL 2026

As anticipation builds for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, teams are finalising their squads and strategies for another high-octane season. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), one of the most followed franchises in the league, have been forced into an early reshuffle after young pacer Harshit Rana was ruled out due to injury.

Rana, who had already missed the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup owing to fitness concerns, has now been sidelined for the IPL as well, leaving a gap in KKR’s pace attack. The three-time champions are set to kick off their campaign against the Mumbai Indians at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on March 29, making the timing of this setback particularly challenging.

KKR name replacement of Harshit Rana

In response to Rana’s absence, KKR have signed experienced Indian fast bowler Navdeep Saini as his replacement for the 2026 season. The franchise confirmed the move after evaluating multiple options, eventually placing their trust in Saini’s pace and prior IPL experience.

This decision comes shortly after another enforced change in the squad, with KKR earlier bringing in Saurabh Dubey as a replacement for injured pacer Akash Deep. The back-to-back alterations indicate that the team management is actively working to maintain depth in their bowling unit ahead of a long tournament.

Saini, who went unsold in the most recent IPL auction, now gets a fresh opportunity to prove his worth on one of the biggest stages in franchise cricket. Known for his ability to generate raw pace and extract bounce, he could play a crucial role for KKR, especially on surfaces that favour fast bowlers.

Star pacer’s numbers in the cash-rich league

Notably, Saini’s journey in the IPL has been a mix of promise and limited opportunities. He was first picked up by the Delhi Capitals in 2017 but did not get a chance to feature that season. His breakthrough came with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2019, where he impressed with his speed and aggression, picking up 11 wickets in 13 matches.

Saini continued with the Bengaluru-based franchise for the next two seasons, showing flashes of his potential, particularly with the new ball. Later, he moved to the Rajasthan Royals, where he had limited game time, featuring in just four matches across two seasons.

Overall, Saini has claimed 23 wickets in his IPL career so far. While the numbers may not appear extraordinary, his ability to bowl at high speeds and deliver under pressure has earned him recognition at the highest level. His performances in the IPL also paved the way for his inclusion in the Indian team, where he has represented the country across all three formats.
