It was a day of drama in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich maintaining their nine-point lead over Borussia Dortmund with both sides securing late victories.

Bayern seemed to be heading to just their second league defeat of the season when they trailed Freiburg 2-0 with 19 minutes to go.

There still seemed little chance of an away win with Bayern 2-1 down entering injury time but Tom Bischoff netted his second of the game, setting the stage for Lennard Karl to net a 99th-minute winner after a great cross from Alphonso Davies.

That win put Bayern 12 points clear before Dortmund played the late game at Stuttgart.

The game remained deadlocked until the 94th-minute when Karim Adeyemi put Dortmund in front and there was still time for Julian Brandt to score again for the visitors two minutes later.

The defeat for Stuttgart saw them leapfrogged by RB Leipzig, who went third with a 2-1 win at Werder Bremen. Hoffenheim were beaten at home by Mainz while Bayer Leverkusen thrashed struggling Wolfsburg 6-3.

Barcelona pull clear with win at Atletico Madrid

Barcelona opened up a seven-point lead over Real Madrid in the Liga title race after winning 2-1 at Atletico Madrid.

Giuliano Simeone put Atleti ahead only for Marcus Rashford to equalise almost immediately in a frantic ending to the first half that culminated in a red card for the home side’s Nico Gonzalez.

Barca struggled to make much headway against the 10 men until Robert Lewandowski was in the right place at the right time to divert the ball home after Juan Musso had made a fine save to deny Joao Cancelo with three minutes remaining.

Real Madrid’s title challenge suffered a major malfunction earlier in the day after Vedat Muriqi struck in injury-time to hand Real Mallorca a vital win in their fight to avoid relegation.

It looked as though Madrid had salvaged a draw when substitute Eder Militao cancelled out Manu Morlanes’ opener with two minutes to go.

It was harsh on Mallorca but they found the inner belief to come again and Son Moix went wild when Muriqi hammered high into the net in the first of five added minutes to help his side move out of the bottom three with a memorable victory.

Lens come unstuck in derby with Lille

Lens remained four points behind Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain after a crushing 3-0 defeat at northern rivals Lille.

Hakon Haraldsson, Felix Correia and Matias Fernandez-Pardo all scored for Lille, who move up to third.

In Serie A, it continues to look bleak for rock-bottom side Verona, who were beaten 1-0 at home by Fiorentina.

Nicolo Fagioli scored the only goal for the Viola with eight minutes to go, shortly after both teams were reduced to 10 men following the dismissals of Tomas Suslov and Albert Gudmundsson.

Lazio and Parma drew 1-1 while Sassuolo beat Cagliari 2-1.
