James Gunn’s top Green Lantern is officially returning in 2026 with a new series from Deadpool’s team. James Gunn has not hid his love of the Green Lantern mythos, having used Guy Gardner in Superman. Furthermore, Hal Jordan and John Stewart will appear in the upcoming Lanterns show on HBO Max.
Just as Green Lantern is making strides in live-action, the comics are following suit. The Corps has just seen its autonomy restored, after a takeover by the United Planets, as well as an all-out assault on the Corps’ homeworld of Oa and the Central Power Battery. The UP, under corrupt leadership, began transforming the Green Lantern Corps into a fascist police force.
It is a great time to be a Green Lantern fan. The Lanterns television show will finally do justice to Hal Jordan in live-action, as well as introduce John Stewart. Nathan Fillion wowed audiences as Guy Gardner in Superman, and now this fan favorite Lantern takes the spotlight in a new special by one of Deadpool’s greatest creative teams.

Duggan and Lolli Presided Over One of Deadpool’s Biggest Eras
As announced by Popverse in their coverage of the ComicsPRO event, DC will release Tales of the Green Lantern Corps: Guy Gardner #1 in May. The one-shot will be written by Gerry Duggan and drawn by Matteo Lolli. Duggan and Lolli should be familiar to Deadpool fans: the duo helped push the Merc with a Mouth to new heights.
Duggan and Lolli’s Deadpool run is fondly remembered by fans today, over a decade after it began. Duggan and Lolli realized that not only is Deadpool funny, but a compelling character as well. The pair’s run happened to coincide with Deadpool’s ascension to the top, thanks to a live-action film starring ex-Green Lantern Ryan Reynolds.

Guy Gardner Is the Perfect Choice to Be the DCU’s First Green Lantern
And while Ryan Reynolds failed to launch as Green Lantern in 2011, James Gunn has had great success integrating the Corps into the new DCU, Guy Gardner especially. While Guy might seem an odd choice for the DCU’s inaugural Green Lantern, he has a long history in the comics, stretching back to the 1960s.

When Abin Sur crash-landed on Earth, his Power Ring selected two possible candidates to fill his shoes: Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner. Jordan was ultimately selected, with Gardner as backup. After years in a coma, Gardner would awaken to become Earth’s sole Green Lantern around the time of Crisis on Infinite Earths.
DC Officially Reveals Green Lantern’s Radical New Redesign
A new age of the Green Lantern legacy begins in 2026 as DC finally reveals the bold redesign of its main Earth Lantern, delivering on a 30-year wait.
Even though the Green Lantern Corps has waxed and waned in the DC Universe, Guy Gardner has remained a constant presence. Gardner is the ultimate foil for the square-jawed Hal Jordan. While Jordan can be cocky and arrogant, Guy Gardner takes it to a whole another level, to the point where, if not written properly, he can come across as abrasive.

Both Guy Gardner and Deadpool Can Be Viewed as One-Note Characters
Making Guy Gardner into a compelling protagonist without depicting him as a total jerk is a fine line. If anyone is up for it, it is Duggan and Lolli. The pair worked their magic on Deadpool, proving the assassin was more than just funny jokes and breaking the fourth wall.
Just like Deadpool, Gardner can be viewed as a one-note character, and defined by his surly attitude. This does Guy Gardner a grave disservice, as it seemingly negates his achievements as a Green Lantern. If Duggan and Lolli can strike a balance between heart and humor, then Guy Gardner will soar to new heights.
