James Gunn’s Superman series will be back on HBO Max in a week, and those looking to catch up on the show should do so now. The DC Universe has grown immensely since the DCU Chapter One projects were announced. While not that many have been released thus far, every single project in the franchise has introduced several exciting heroes and villains.
It is clear that DC Studios co-CEOs Gunn and Peter Safran were not kidding about having a 10-year plan that would bring forth a new vision for DC. After the divisiveness that the old DCEU movie franchise generated, a clear plan for the franchise that spans across live-action movies and shows, animated projects, video games, and more is exactly what Gunn’s DCU needs to stand out.
In 2025’s Superman, David Corenswet established himself as the new Man of Steel, delivering a heartwarming performance. After the film’s success, DC’s slate of releases has been tailored to continue what Superman started, with Milly Alcock’s Supergirl, which arrives in theaters on June 26, 2026, and Gunn’s Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, which releases on July 9, 2027, doing so on the movie side.
On the TV side, two spinoff series were put in motion by DC. The live-action Jimmy Olsen series will come to HBO Max with a true-crime feel and bring back The Daily Planet crew, while introducing The Flash villain Gorilla Grodd. In animation, Krypto Saves the Day!, a series of shorts that is executive-produced by James Gunn, debuted on August 13, 2025.
Krypto’s HBO Max Series Returns Soon
So far, three Krypto shorts have been released on HBO Max: School Bus Scuffle, Halloween Havoc, and Package Pandemonium. Gunn has claimed that the series is not canon to the DC Universe, though it was released right after David Corenswet’s Superman movie, with Krypto’s design following that of the movie version of the character.
After its latest episode was released on November 28, 2025, the series of shorts is coming back with Coastal Catastrophe, which will fly into HBO Max on April 18. While Superman, who resembles Corenswet’s Man of Steel, appears in the Krypto shorts, the Super Dog is firmly the series’ star. In Coastal Catastrophe, Krypto gets into sandy adventures when he goes to the beach with Superman.
Why HBO Max’s Krypto Saves the Day Is Worth A Binge
As mentioned, HBO Max’s Superman spinoff series consists of only three shorts so far. As such, it takes little to no time to finish the show in one go. All three episodes of Krypto Saves the Day! have been around 5–6 minutes long thus far. Based on that, DC fans will need less than half an hour to finish a binge of the fun series.
Krypto plays a major role in 2026’s Supergirl movie, so checking out his series of shorts before then can help ease the wait.
No, Krypto Saves the Day! does not present any mind-blowing scenarios or reveals that change the DCU — it is not even canon. However, the shorts are perfect for those who enjoyed 2025’s Superman and want their light-hearted DC fix, as the episodes have the same sunny disposition. It makes for a particularly entertaining watch for parents with young children, making it Superman content for the whole family.
