Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) endured yet another painful defeat in IPL 2026, but this time, the spotlight wasn’t just on the result – it was firmly on a contentious umpiring decision that left players and fans fuming. Following their last-ball loss to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Eden Gardens, KKR all-rounder Rovman Powell openly criticized what he described as a “blunder” from the on-field umpires.

Controversial call sparks frustration in KKR camp

The incident unfolded early in KKR’s innings and quickly became the talking point of the match. Opener Finn Allen miscued a delivery from young pacer Prince Yadav, sending the ball high towards the boundary. Positioned near deep third man, spinner Digvesh Rathi completed a diving catch that initially looked impressive. However, replays hinted that his foot may have brushed the boundary rope cushion at the moment of contact – something that would invalidate the catch under cricket laws.

Despite the doubt, on-field umpires Adrian Holdstock and Akshay Totre chose not to consult the third umpire and upheld the dismissal. That decision didn’t sit well with KKR’s dressing room. Speaking after the match, Powell made his frustration clear.

“Definitely (more angles should have been looked at). We talked about that when he came off. We thought we had seen in the IPL that the umpires have gone upstairs for lesser things, and things that are not as close as that,” Powell said, visibly frustrated.
“Maybe it was a blunder on their part,” he added.

While Powell refrained from putting the entire blame for the loss on the officials, he did question the consistency of umpiring standards this season. For a team already struggling to find momentum, such moments only deepen the sense of frustration.

Despite the early setback, KKR managed to post a competitive total of 181/4, but the match was far from decided. Lucknow Super Giants seemed to be on the back foot for most of the chase, slipping to 128/7 after 16 overs. At that stage, KKR appeared firmly in control and on course for their first win of the season.

However, cricket often thrives on unpredictability. Young batter Mukul Choudhary turned the game on its head with a fearless counterattack. Playing one of the most impactful knocks of the season, he smashed an unbeaten 54 off just 27 deliveries, peppered with seven towering sixes and two boundaries. His late blitz stunned the Eden Gardens crowd and carried LSG over the line on the very last ball, sealing a dramatic three-wicket victory.

Beyond the controversial call, Powell also pointed to the nature of the pitch as a factor. Eden Gardens, traditionally known for its batting-friendly surfaces, hasn’t quite lived up to that reputation this season.

“It’s not that classic Eden Gardens wicket where you just go and turn around the strike and blast. It was not a 220-wicket; there was a little bit in it for the bowlers, especially when they used the slower balls,” Powell said.

“It’s very disappointing. You want to make Eden Gardens your fortress, it’s your home with your fans behind you,” he added.

The loss leaves KKR in a difficult position, sitting near the bottom of the table with just one point from four matches – a solitary washout being their only relief so far. Yet, despite the mounting pressure, Powell struck a hopeful note about the road ahead.

“If you see the history, the winners of IPL build up in the middle and back end of the tournament. It’s not easy when you don’t start well, but our destiny is still in our hands. We still have 10 games left,” he said.

With a crucial clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) coming up on April 14, KKR will be desperate to finally open their account. Whether they can put this heartbreak behind them and turn their season around remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – the pressure is only growing with each passing game.
