Hurzeler flattered by Leverkusen rumours but outlines loyalty to Brighton

Fabian Hurzeler is flattered by rumours linking him with Bayer Leverkusen but remains totally committed to Brighton.

Leverkusen only appointed Kasper Hjulmand in September following Erik ten Hag’s ill-fated, two-month stint in charge.

But with the Werkself currently finding themselves outside the Champions League qualification places, there have been suggestions they might make another change at the end of this season.

Reports in Germany this week suggested Leverkusen were interested in activating a €15m release clause in Hurzeler’s contract with Brighton, who are 10th in the Premier League table.

But the 33-year-old is in no rush to leave the American Express Stadium, with the Seagulls having an opportunity to better last season’s eighth-placed finish.

Hurzeler told Sky Sports: “It’s always an honour to be linked with these kinds of rumours, but I’m really happy here at Brighton.

“I’m very thankful for the trust and support the club gives me. We are focused on a strong finish to the season.

“I’m definitely totally committed. There are no other thoughts. In football, there is not always this loyalty and support from a club.

“I really feel trusted and welcomed here. I can express myself and be successful here. There are so many things to play for until the end of the season. That’s my only focus.”

Hurzeler has won 27 of his 69 Premier League games in charge of Brighton, with only Graham Potter (34/120) overseeing more victories with the team in the competition.

The German’s win rate of 39% is the best of any Brighton manager in the Premier League, while their 1.6 goals per game under him is only bettered by the 1.7 they managed under new Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi.
