Hull City 0-0 Coventry City: Goalless draw takes Championship leaders a point closer to Premier Leag

Coventry City crept ever closer to ending their Premier League exile despite being forced to battle for their 0-0 draw away to Championship promotion hopefuls Hull City.

On a day that saw Middlesbrough and Millwall both drop points, the Sky Blues now need just four points to guarantee a return to the top flight for the first time in 25 years.

Hull came close to opening the scoring in the 15th minute when Amir Hadziahmetovic’s cross into the box saw Carl Rushworth fail to claim, with the loose ball falling to John Egan, who saw his shot cleared off the line by Liam Kitching.

Frank Lampard’s side improved as the first half went on but only managed to test Ivor Pandur once through Victor Torp’s curling effort from the edge of the penalty area.

Joe Gelhardt and Oliver McBurnie saw tame headers easily gathered by Rushworth, but Coventry had an appeal for a second-half penalty waved away by referee David Webb.

A cross from the left from Milan van Ewijk appeared to strike the hand of Hull captain Lewie Coyle, but the spot-kick was not given as Ellis Simms wildly lashed over the crossbar in the 77th minute as the spoils were shared.

Data Debrief: Coventry and Hull fail to deliver

In a battle between two of the top three highest scorers in the Championship, both Hull and Coventry struggled to find that spark in the final third on Monday, with the Sky Blues’ six shots in the match their lowest total in a single match in the league in 2025-26.

Sergej Jakirovic’s side did edge the expected goals (xG) battle, registering a total of 0.77 from their 13 shots to Coventry’s tally of 0.47, with only one of their attempts on target.

Coventry have now won just one of their last 21 league games played on Easter Monday (D7 L13), beating Bristol City 3-1 in April 2021. Away from home, they are winless in 15 (D5 L10) since beating Ipswich Town 2-0 in April 1994.
