Silk is the most vital resource in Hollow Knight: Silksong next to your health, providing Hornet ways to unleash powerful abilities and restore her vitality. By collecting unique items called Spool Fragments, you can bolster your total Silk higher, giving you more ways to recover and fight against the game’s many dangers.
Spool Fragments are similar in nature to Mask Shards in Silksong, which give you an additional bar of health if you collect enough of them. By gathering two Spool Fragments, you increase Hornet’s total Silk amount for the rest of your journey. This quick upgrade system lets you gain Silk at a far faster rate than the four Mask Shards it takes to boost your max health.

Discover The Pieces To Build A Wider Web
When you begin your adventure, you may spot a Spool Fragment or two as you travel into new areas. However, many Spool Fragments are inaccessible until you unlock specific abilities, such as Hornet’s Clawline Grappling Hook, Double Jump, or other skills.
In total, there are 18 Spool Fragments scattered around different areas, with some only remaining in spaces you can access during certain parts of the game’s story. Some even exist in Silksong‘s hidden Act 3 story section, which has a unique set of requirements to unlock.
Be careful trying to find Spool Fragments in Act 3, as reaching that part of the story locks you out from some areas that were in Act 2, preventing you from getting 100% of all the upgrade items.
Spool Fragments tend to glow with a white light, giving you a good idea of where they are, regardless of whether you have explored a map area or not. Some are given as quest rewards, while others are bought from vendors, so be prepared to do a variety of tasks to get each Fragment.
Spool Fragment #1 Location — Bellhart
The easiest Spool Fragment to get is one that appears in Bellhart, a safe zone between Shellwood and Greymoor. In the vendor area, speak to the NPC Frey to buy this upgrade item for 720 Rosaries, the primary currency of the game.
You need to have completed the “My Missing Courier” side quest before you unlock the Fragment in Frey’s inventory for the sale. While Rosaries in Hollow Knight: Silksong can be tough to farm in large amounts, defeating enough enemies should allow you to obtain this item faster than some of the others.
Spool Fragment #2 Location — Bone Bottom
This Fragment is found below the Mosshome elevator in Bone Bottom, in a room you can reach by hitting a lever that opens up a path down. Continuing down along some ledges before Bone Bottom’s biggest space will lead you along the ceiling above the location where a path to The Marrow can be seen below.
Hang to the right of the ceiling until you reach a narrow path, then climb up past some flying enemies into a space with a spike trap. Here, you can destroy a wall to your left to reveal the Spool Fragment, which lies glowing on a pedestal.
Spool Fragment #3 Location — Weavenest Alta
To reach this Fragment, you have to use the Needolin ability to unlock the large door in the Moss Grotto. This will give you access to the Weavenest Alta area, where a teleporter can transport Hornet to its bottom floor.
From the lowest point of the Weavenest, you have to activate your Double Jump to climb to the upper left middle of the zone. This section hosts a couple of sleeping enemies near a large pool, who you can sneak past to claim the Fragment they guard.
Spool Fragment #4 Location — Deep Docks
This Fragment is a fairly simple one to find, located right below the central Deep Docks bench you’ll find naturally through story progression. Follow the lava to where it flows into a central chamber, where a few platforms coated in lava can be seen.
From here, simply hang off the sides of the platforms to avoid the lava on them, then jump to the upper left where a secluded space can be found. Here, you’ll see the Fragment on the top of a series of shelves, easily accessible for Hornet to grab.
Spool Fragment #5 Location — Deep Docks
Hornet needs the Clawling Grappling Hook ability to reach this Fragment, as well as a Simple Key in Silksong that can open a locked door in the Deep Docks. Past the door in the lower left corner of the Docks, you’ll come across a room filled with lava, with several platforms hanging from chains.
Head to the right of this room to a narrow passageway leading up into a narrow space with spikes lining some of the walls. You’ll need to use Hornet’s Double Jump, Float, and Hook abilities to navigate this tight area, following it up, down, and to the left until it drops into another section of lava.
While floating down toward more lava, you have to use the Grappling Hook and Hornet’s downward attack to bounce off some red flowers leading to your right. Do this to keep climbing up, where you have to avoid a falling rock that could derail your progress. Past this obstacle, you can reach a separate room with the Fragment and a golden lever leading back to this area’s entrance.
Spool Fragment #6 Location — Greymoor
When arriving in Greymoor, you can find its Fragment to the far right, in a room where a drop leads to the Far Fields area. From here, use various attacks to launch yourself off floating orbs made of Ragpelts to climb higher and higher in this space.
Just like the previous Spool Fragment, you’ll need to have at least the Faydown Cloak ability to float between platforms to reach the item in Greymoor.
By using different platforms to the left and right, you can keep heading upward, getting past various enemies to find the Fragment on an upper left platform at the very top.
Spool Fragment #7 Location — Greymoor
If you’ve been helping find Lost Fleas in Silksong, you have a chance to gain a Spool Fragment as a reward later on. Once the Flea Caravan reaches Greymoor, you can collect 15 Lost Fleas and speak to Mooshka to get the Caravan moving again.
Eventually, the Flea Caravan will reach Greymoor from The Marrow, where Hornet can talk to Mooshka once again while pursuing even more Lost Fleas. Ride the Caravan after helping 15 Fleas to see it reach the Blasted Steps, where Mooshka will reward you with the Fragment.
Spool Fragment #8 Location – Blasted Steps
The Fragment here is found to the left of the fast travel Bellway point in this area, which is already close to a bench you can rest on. Once you’ve recovered a bit, go left to the next room and begin climbing up. Continue this way until you see a tent with strange markings, which you can investigate by going forward.
Go up and left in the next room to meet the bug vendor Grindle, who sells the Fragment here for 680 Rosaries. This amount of currency should be easy to farm, as there is that resting point close by.
Spool Fragment #9 Location — Grand Gate
The Grand Gate is the lower left subarea of the larger Citadel, featuring a tall room with multiple scales forming a series of platforms. When you step on these platforms, they shift depending on your weight, with one part lowering and another rising higher.
The Fragment here is at the top of the room with the scales, but you have to cleverly use your weight to make it easier to ascend here. Although the Double Jump makes this space faster to climb, any methods that help you reach the isolated upper space will let you find the Spool piece you want.
Spool Fragment #10 Location — The Slab
This Fragment can be found once you have the Key of Indolent and Key of Heretic items, which help you reach the lower levels of The Slab. From the Bellway fast travel point, head upward, climbing past a few cages until a spot to the west leads into the nearby Mount Fay area.
A wooden wall here blocks most access to Mount Fay, but you are still able to climb it up further. The Fragment is in this small space, accessible immediately after you discover it in the area.
Spool Fragment #11 Location — High Halls
Above the section of High Halls called The Forum, the Fragment is found at the very top of this area. To reach The Forum’s apex, you need to have Hornet’s Cling Grip and Clawline abilities, which will help you attach yourself to the rotating rings moving among the metal here.
By staying attached to rings, you can steadily head up, moving past spikes and other platforms to reach an upper room. From the center of this space, you can launch Hornet up or climb steadily to eventually reach the Fragment at the peak of this place.
Spool Fragment #12 Location — Choral Chambers
This Fragment is relatively easy to get, as all it requires is for you to complete the “Balm for the Wounded” side quest. This Wayfarer Wish is found on the Wishwall bulletin board near the Caretaker NPC, toward the top right of the larger Choral Chambers.
Spool Fragment #13 Location — Whiteward
Whiteward’s Fragment is well-hidden underneath its central elevator, but you can’t reach it until the elevator is far enough away. To remove this obstacle, ride the Whiteward elevator all the way down, then start climbing up until you reach a pressure plate that summons it to a higher location.
After doing this, quickly jump down into the hallways in the middle of Whiteward and wait for the elevator to pass by. Doing this allows you to drop the lowest left part of the elevator shaft, where the Fragment can be collected.
Spool Fragment #14 Location — Underworks
To the right of The Cauldron subzone of this area, a vertical shaft leads downward further toward a pit of lava. This place is accessed better by traveling right from the Grand Bellway, then taking the right elevator from it down before going left again to enter this space.
Once you reach the Underworks from the Grand Bellway, head as far down as you can. The Fragment will be at the bottom left, in a small alcove right below the only platform hanging from a chain before the lava at its depths.
Spool Fragment #15 Location — Underworks
This Fragment is best found by those who have plenty of Hornet’s combat tools in Silksong, as it will require some fighting to obtain. Start looking for this Fragment by heading left from where the vendor of the Underworks is near a bench within the same room.
By clinging to the left of a larger area, you can strike a small lever to open a downward path past some steaming vents. By taking another left path at the bottom of this route, you’ll come across a dangerous room full of enemies that spawn in waves. Defeating all the enemies here will unlock a nearby gate where the Fragment resides.
Spool Fragment #16 Location — Songclave
Unlike other Fragments, this Spool piece is acquired in multiple ways. Both involve completing the “Wandering Merchant” side quest, which unlocks a new NPC you can trade with. You can tackle this quest either in the main story or during the hidden Act 3, giving you more than one chance to get it.
Once you have finished this quest, the vendor Jubilana will sell the Fragment to you for 500 Rosaries, making it easy to gain another useful upgrade for Hornet.
Spool Fragment #17 Location — Memorium
This Fragment is found in the lower left corner of the Memorium area, but it is one of the hardest to actually reach. At the top of the left-most room of this area, you have to at least use the Double Jump and Faydown Cloak abilities to slowly descend to the bottom of this place, avoiding a ton of spikes blocking your path.
The Clawline Grappling Hook will also help you avoid spikes in the walls, floor, and ceiling of this space as you descend. Use different walls to cling and reposition to eventually get to the Fragment at the end of this route.
Spool Fragment #18 Location — Cogwork Core
The lowest, bottom right corner of the Cogwork Core has several small corridors that host the Fragment, including one path that opens up when you strike a lever. Entering here places you in a tunnel full of hazards, from projectile enemies to vents of steam that can inflict damage instantly.
Carefully move around this space with the aim of getting lower, avoiding both the enemies, steam, and razor-sharp cogs that act like spikes. Once you make it past a room with multiple vents from the floor and ceiling, the Fragment is just ahead, past a gate you can break.
Gaining every upgrade item will allow Hornet to heal more often in battle and use a greater variety of abilities to overcome difficult challenges. Every type of build in Hollow Knight: Silksong benefits from more Silk, so finding all the Spool Fragments in the game is well worth the effort.
