Other than knowing that it is in the works, we know very little about Hogwarts Legacy 2. Expected to continue the story of 2023’s Harry Potter-inspired RPG, the Hogwarts Legacy sequel is currently in development over at Avalanche Software with Warner Bros. Games at the helm, despite its recent acquisition. However, little is known about its potential storyline, setting, characters, or time period, especially considering that the first game was set over a century before the events of the beloved Harry Potter franchise.

That being said, an interview which took place over on Variety last year did shed some light on the Hogwarts Legacy sequel, and how it may coincide with the launch of HBO’s Harry Potter.

Hogwarts Legacy 2 Was Confirmed A While Back

Confirmed back in September 2024, Hogwarts Legacy 2‘s announcement did not come as a surprise with its first game becoming the best-selling game of 2023. With legions of Harry Potter fans at its back, the controversy surrounding its launch did nothing to affect its numbers, and fans flocked to the magical RPG in their millions. Despite some fans having issues with the game’s lack of post-game content, it seems as though the RPG is still regarded with fondness, which makes its sequel all the more exciting.

Now, according to an interview with WB Interactive president David Haddad back in 2025, the Hogwarts Legacy sequel already has a clear-cut plan, and it all depends on the upcoming HBO Harry Potter adaptation. Set to explore the world of the Boy Who Lived once more, the series will reenact the beloved movie and book series, and is set to air in 2027. As such, it seems as though Avalanche Software wish to coincide the events of Hogwarts Legacy 2 with HBO’s Harry Potter.

“The rest of the company was very curious about what we helped to unlock with Hogwarts Legacy last year,” Haddad said. According to Variety, “Haddad says the games team has been coordinating some of the big-picture storytelling elements in the Hogwarts Legacy sequel with the storylines that will play out in the Harry Potter HBO series coming from Warner Bros. Television.”

Gamers Aren’t Convinced By Hogwarts Legacy 2 Plans

This plan to “coordinate” storylines is what has got fans talking over the past few months, especially as we do not know to which extent this coordination will go. With the events of Hogwarts Legacy taking place a century before the show, how exactly will this work? It remains to be seen, but for now, fans over on r/HarryPotterGame have been discussing the implications.

“I liked how it was its own thing,” the top comment read, with over a thousand upvotes. “I’m worried WB is going to f**k this up.” User DALTT made an excellent point, adding, “I still really hope they don’t do just an outright game of storylines from the series/books. I don’t mind storylines that connect, like let’s say there’s a Chamber of Secrets storyline or something. Or even as far as, like, Tom Riddle being a character, and it takes place in the 40s, and we learn more about his early years via him being a villain in the game. I’d be okay with them taking the connection exactly about that far. But yeah, I hope it’s still its own storyline.”

It seems as though the Hogwarts Legacy sequel has a lot to live up to, both with its plans to coordinate its story and the first installment being such a hit, but for now, it seems as though its developers have some way to go to line-up with the launch of HBO’s Harry Potter next year.
