HBO’s female-empowered comedy-drama is taking its final bow later this year, and viewers just got a sneak peek at their last season.

Hacks premiered in 2021, featuring the characters Deborah Vance and Ava Daniels as a comedian and a writer who aimed to breathe new life into their respective careers. Vance was on the verge of losing her Las Vegas residency before she brought Daniels on board as a comedy writer, even though Daniels had been blacklisted because of a social media post.

This year marks the fifth and final season of the series that has already won 12 Emmy Awards — four of which went to Jean Smart, who plays Deborah. Hannah Einbinder, who portrays Ava, has also received an Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress. On Saturday, the show dropped new images teasing its final season and some of its guest stars (via Vogue).

Actors Ann Dowd, Cherry Jones, and Leslie Bibb will be joining the cast to play some unique and out-of-this-world characters. In particular, Dowd shows up as a blue alien with white hair and antennae.

The show’s creators also revealed that the finale has been in the works since the beginning. Hacks showrunner Lucia Aniello said, “Part of our original pitch for the show was the very last scene.” She continued, “We knew how the season would end and how the show would end if we were so lucky as to get to imagine it how we wanted.” Aniello promised full-circle moments and a lot of callbacks to the first four seasons. The goal was to create a satisfying ending for viewers.

The HBO show casts comedy powerhouses Megan Stalter, Paul W. Downs, Robby Hoffman, Kaitlin Olson, Christina Hendricks, Jane Adams, Helen Hunt, and many more. The cast perfectly accentuates the show’s sarcastic and mean-spirited humor. Still, the series flaunts its sentimental side as Deborah and Ava’s friendship grows into a meaningful portrayal of female relationships.

During the season four finale, Ava confronts Deborah about her alcohol abuse and self-destructive behavior. Stuck in her ways, Deborah tells Ava to go home. This causes yet another rift in their relationship, but it doesn’t last long after Ava wakes up to Deborah’s obituary. Thankfully, Deborah is still alive, but the fake news of her death forces her into action.

She’s not happy with how the obituary is written or how she’ll be remembered after death. So, Deborah enlists Ava to help her. The ending was ambiguous as the main character’s next steps remain unclear. Hopefully, viewers won’t have to wait too long for answers.

There is no official release date for season five, but viewers can catch up on the first four seasons of Hacks that are streaming on HBO Max.
